CIVIL SERVICE STROLLERS 2 4 EDINBURGH CITY

City U19's eventually managed to overcome a resilient and stuffy Strollers side at Muirhouse this afternoon.

Civil opted to play a 4-5-1 formation in the first half against the wind. This meant City had to play a patient passing game as they probed for spaces in the Civil defence.

It took just before half time before City made the breakthrough from a set piece. A corner was swung in by Lee Tubby and met by Scott Cowan at the far post and his downward header was diverted past the Civil keeper by a defender.

City started the second half with more purpose against the wind. It was no surprise when they increased their lead when Danny Denholm evaded the Strollers defence and dispatched a fine shot into the Strollers net. Denholm should have made it 3-0 with a chance just after he scored but screwed the ball past the post.

Strollers plugged away with a 4-4-2 formation and were rewarded with their persistence when they scored direct from a corner after Craig Strong let the cross slip from his grasp and the ball finished up in the back of the net.

Strollers took heart from that goal and found themselves on level terms when their forward wrong footed Peter Stenhouse and was tripped in the box to give away a penalty. Civil scored from the resultant spot kick and it was game on. This seem to galvanise City into action and they took the lead when a fine through ball unlocked the Strollers defence and super sub Ryan Wilson ran onto score.

City went further ahead when a fine move up the left and cross from Danny Denholm found Lloyd Duncan at the far post to finish with a superb strike low into the corner of the Strollers net. City could have scored right at the end when Ryan Wilson ran through but his shot was smothered by the Strollers keeper.

City maintain their 100% record in the League Cup and next weeks game against Tynecastle at Fernieside will provide a tough test if they are to preserve that record.
