■ North Berwick's
Eathan Craigie (6) steers the ball into the empty net after Josh
Cannon's (16) effort was deliberately handled outside the box by
Edinburgh City keeper Blake Anderson
Edinburgh City Caley played with
10 men for 47 minutes of this game after goalkeeper, Blake
Anderson, was red carded on 24 minutes for deliberately handling
the ball outside the box. And a further 2 red cards, one for
each side, were brandished by referee Alan Downie in the final
ten minutes for second yellow offences.
But North Berwick were riled at the
disallowed goal that was "scored" in the move that led to the
City goalkeeper's departure. Josh Cannon's shot having been
parried into the path of Eathan Craigie who slotted home before
play was pulled back and the first of the 3 red cards shown.
However the East Lothian side only had
themselves to blame for not securing at least a point from this
game as they failed to convert a number of second half chances
as they took full advantage of the extra player.
Caley, on the other hand, were more
clinical and it was a double from Tim Proctor that continued the
home side's unbeaten league start to the season.
The adjacent pitch at Sighthill was
declared unplayable due to some excess surface water on the
Calder Road side but the big pitch number 3 was given the go
ahead as these two unbeaten League Division three sides went
head to head in what was sure to be a close encounter.
And that is exactly how it turned out
with both sides creating a number of chances. The woodwork being
hit, two goals disallowed and three red cards to make it an
entertaining afternoon in the West Edinburgh sunshine.

It took the home side just five
minutes to storm into an early lead up the slope and against the
wind. Tim Proctor had started off especially lively and
he was quick onto a great through ball from the right hand side
of the pitch to coolly slot past the exotically named Alex
Valenzeula in the North Berwick goal.
Moments later and it was almost two.
This time it was Liam Black that found himself in space and he
thundered a shot towards goal that Valenzuela got strong hands
to to parry safely away.
Caley were well on top and North
Berwick were finding it difficult to get anything going. Instead
looking increasingly happy to simply clear their lines. It was
the home side that continued to pour forward and they had
another wonderful chance on 15 minutes. Tim Proctor stormed down
the left and his shot across the goalkeeper was only parried
into the path of Dean Kerr. It looked like the City right winger
would surely double his side's lead but he somehow contrived to
side foot the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.
The big right winger was a constant
thorn the remainder of this half and if he would just show a
little more belief in the final third then he would be a fine
player.
North Berwick finally created a chance
on 20 minutes when a free kick on the right was swung in behind
a static Edinburgh City defence. Ross Armstrong reacted quickest
but Blake Anderson was alert and saved well with his feet.
Then on 24 minutes the City keeper got
his marching orders. Josh Cannon was played through and Anderson
came rushing out to make a fine diving save to his right.
Unfortunately for the City number one he was yards outside his
box. The ball fell straight into the path of team-mate Eathan
Craigie and he slotted home into the empty net to score what
looked like an equaliser.
However,
referee Alan Downie had already whistled and play was pulled
back for a direct free-kick and a flash of red for Anderson.
Glen Donoghue reluctantly put the gloves on for the remaining 56
minutes of this match and he watched as the free kick flew high
over his bar.
The remainder of this half saw City
re-adjusting to having ten men and a new goalkeeper but chances
at both ends were at a premium. But you could sense that the
game's momentum had swung in favour of the team from East
Lothian.
Half Time 1-0
Within
4 minutes of the re-start North Berwick scored an equaliser. The
ever lively Jordan Eales was played in on the left hand
side. He beat Glen Donoghue to the ball and although the stand
in goalie got something to the ball it fell loose and Eales was
able to slide it home.
Suddenly you felt that North Berwick
would go on to close out this game, with the advantage of the
extra player. But Caley had other ideas and within 2
minutes they had re-taken the lead.
A high looping shot by the industrious
Mark Nicol was palmed onto the bar by Alex Valenzeula. The big
keeper wasn't able to gather the rebound properly and Tim
Proctor was on hand to slam the ball into the back of the
net from 6 yards.
We then entered into a period of the
game that North Berwick will look back on and wonder how on
earth they never scored any more goals. My notes show at least 6
excellent chances that went a begging.
The first was on 49 minutes when
Jordan Eales hit a fine shot from the left hand side of the box.
He was just about to turn away in celebration when the ball
rebounded off the inside of the post and into the grateful arms
of Donoghue.
A minute later and North Berwick had
the ball in the net for a third time in this game. Jason Lamb
was the player who did all the good work on the right hand side.
He shot towards the far left hand corner where it was met by the
sliding boot of Eales and he despatched it into the net from a
yard. But he was adjudged to be in an offside position and the
goal was chalked off.

On 57 minutes, Josh Cannon was played
clear through the middle by Eathan Craigie but Glen Donoghue was
quick to close the angles down and Cannon's shot slipped inches
past the left hand post.
Jason Lamb was becoming increasingly
influential in this half but he was being countered by Ryan Vas
at left back. Jamie Turnbull also came onto a good game in the
second half for Caley, showing some good periods of composure as
North Berwick turned the screw.
Still the East Lothian side swept
forward. Caley were now playing a very high line and the away
side were finding lots of space to play balls in behind the
defence for their strikers and midfielders to run onto.
Lamb was again on the ball as the game
went into the final quarter. He beat Donoghue to the ball on the
right edge of the box. The goal was empty but the angle was
acute and he made the wrong decision to shoot when a cut back
might have brought greater reward for his side.
On
66 minutes, Josh Cannon was through again but Glen Donoghue
saved well and the danger was cleared as the chances piled up
for North Berwick Colts. Then on 71 minutes number parity was
restored when Thomas Miller was shown a second yellow card for a
late tackle.
But 10-a-side lasted only 3 minutes
when City midfielder, John Thom, who had a great game was sent
packing for a daft deliberate hand ball that saw him receive a
second yellow.
Nineteen players left on the pitch
with minutes to go. Would North Berwick snatch that equaliser?
Jason Lamb had the last remaining chance and almost got the goal
that his side deserved for their second half pressure.
He
collected the ball once again on the right wing. Turning inside,
he drove into the box before unleashing a powerful shot towards
the bottom left hand corner. But to his dismay, and stand in
hero Glen Donoghue's delight, the ball flew a foot wide and the
points were safely tucked in the bag alongside the continued
unbeaten run for Caley.
