■ George Hairs and
Cameron Waddell get ready to celebrate Ross Anderson's wonder
strike
A last gasp equaliser by
Ryan Gillespie broke Edina's hearts and gave Gairdoch a second
chance with a home replay to come in Falkirk next weekend.
A brilliant goal by Ross Anderson
looked to have sealed the semi-final spot for a slightly off
colour Edina Hibs but the central Scotland side pressed hard in
the final few minutes and got the equaliser with just 20 seconds
left on the clock.
Both sides struggled with nerves and a
lightning fast surface on the Castlebrae 3G but Edina Hibs were
the better overall side and if they play to their full
capabilities then they still have a great chance to progress.
Connor Welsh was once again outstanding in the middle of the
park whilst Gairdoch were marshalled superbly by wee sweeper
Aaron Watters.
A large crowd had gathered at
Castlebrae to cheer on both sides but this game suffered from
nervous tension from the off with little in the way of good
football being played. The three match officials did their best
to maintain decent distance between spectators and touchline but
it was a constant battle and the language left a lot to be
desired at what should have been the boys' special
occasion. One adult (parent) directed his own tensions with a
tirade at his own boy, with the only result being a welling up
in the lad's face. Crazy.
The first half produced little in the
way of chances. Gairdoch did hit the bar after just 2 minutes
from a flick on at a corner but it was the top of the goal and
the ball went behind for a goal kick.
Edina might have done better on 15
minutes when Andrew Mair looked to have burst clear on the left
before being brought down Aaron Watters who was shown the yellow
card by Hugh Logan.
Gairdoch then went close with a direct
free kick with Callum Speedie quick across his goal to save a
dipping curler from Garry Hall.
The game had opened up a bit as the
players began to settle on the surface and with the occasion and
the home side produced the best move of the half when they went
zipping down the right wing before Ross Anderson pulled the ball
back to Connor Welsh. Welsh controlled the ball and switched it
onto his right foot before hitting the shot inches past the
right hand post.
Then
just as we looked like we'd be turning around at 0-0 Gairdoch
took the lead. A loose ball wasn't cleared by the Edina defence
and it was lashed home from 14 yards by Thomas Hall to
the delight of the home touchline.
Half Time 0-1
Hall almost made it 2-0 on 39 minutes
when he connected with a cross from Grant Craig after some awful
overplaying at the back by Edina but his "kneed" effort grazed
the outside of the right post.
You could sense however that Edina
Hibs were starting to take control of the midfield and with
Welsh getting his passing game going they were finding all sorts
of space on both flanks. It was in one of these spaces that
Jordan Brown found himself on 43 minutes when he hit an
unstoppable 25 yard right foot shot that crashed off the bar
before being cleared behind for a corner.

From the resultant kick George
Hairs rose unchallenged at the front post and watched his
looping header sail over everyone and into the far right hand
corner of the net to make it 1-1. Cue loud celebrations on and
off the pitch and this quarter final was suddenly springing to
life.
Jordan Brown tried again with a
curling corner on the right that almost sneaked into the top
left hand corner and was only just missed by an onrushing Edina
player.
The play was now all towards the
Gairdoch goal with Edina Hibs finding ever increasing momentum.
Huge gaps appeared in between defence and midfield with Gairdoch
leaving themselves 2 on 2 on more than one occasion.
George Hairs looked to have taken
advantage of one of these situations when Edina broke quickly
from a Gairdoch attack but a fabulous saving tackle by Aaron
Watters saved the day and the tie remained even.
But the inevitable Edina goal was only
delayed a few minutes when they broke again with acres of space
available to them. This time the ball was fed out to the wide
right to Ross Anderson who set himself up before striking
a wonderful shot from 30 yards high into the left hand corner of
the net. Castlebrae went mad and you sensed there would only be
one winner, but from nowhere Gairdoch found a second wind.
First, Grant Craig skipped into the
box past 3 challenges before finally being tackled just as he
was about to shoot. Then with the minutes ticking away the Edina
goal led a charmed life with one almighty scramble. Thomas Hall
produced a fine save out of Daniel Kerr and then Harry
Extance had a go but his shot was cleared off the line.
Eventually Edina blootered the ball clear and that looked like
it would be Gairdoch's last chance.

Then deep into injury time they got
the equaliser. Gairdoch were piling on the pressure and the ball
fell loose to Ryan Gillespie who found himself in a bit
of space on the right side of the box. He had time to pick his
spot before hitting a low shot back across goal and into the
left hand corner to take this tie to a replay.
There wasn't even time to pass the
kick-off out of the centre circle before Hugh Logan blew for
full time and a rematch in Falkirk next Saturday.
