Fernieside recorded a fantastic win against a strong Dalkeith side
to move into the quarter finals. Dalkeith had more possession, more
of the ball, and a lot of shots. Fernieside were on the back foot
for long long spells today. What these Fernieside players can do
however is fight, and fight we did. We had a game plan, we stuck to
it, and it came off.
Fernieside took the lead on 24 minutes when a cracking corner from
Niki Robertson was flung into the back post, and there was winger
Keith Shields to bullet the ball home with his head from 3 yards.
1-0 Fernie, and at this stage, Dalkieth took the game to us. Attack
after attack, but they could not get past this well organised Fernie
rearguard.
Half Time Fernieside 1-0 Dalkeith
The
2nd half started the same as the 1st ended, with Dalkeith running
the show, and it was on 51 minutes that Dalkeith made it 1-1. Ryan
Fisher getting the goal from a cracking move down the Fernieside
left. Game on at this stage.
Dalkeith battered the Fernieside goal, They tried left side, the
right side, they tried running at us, they tried everything. With 2
minutes to go, Dalkeith's striker missed the chance of the
match. Usually so dependable the lad scooped the ball over from a
good Jason King cross from 5 yards.
With
everyone looking at their watches, the save of the match came from
Dalkeith number one Craig Penycuik, a cracking drive from Ryan
Murray, heading for the top corner, and there was Penycuik with an
awesome save.
94
minutes on the clock, we are all thinking extra time, and then up
steps big Ryan Gibson.
He
took a Brett Grant headed ball 30 yards out, turned his man, took a
stride and unleashed a fantastic unstoppable shot from 25 yards high
into the net. Delight for the ex-Dalkeith striker, and delight soon
followed for everyone as the ref blew for full time.
