5TH OCTOBER, 2008
Under 15 south east region cup 2nd round
FERNIESIDE 1 0 EDINBURGH CITY

■Fernieside Midfielder Ryan Murray fires in a shot from 15 yards, well saved by keeper

Stunning is one of many words to describe this stubborn Fernieside team today.

Edinburgh City we know are a better team, on paper they have better players. But today, Fernieside proved what hard work and working and sticking to a game plan can achieve.

The Fernieside boys worked very hard all week in training on the plan, and the club are all delighted the plan worked.

From the start of this match, Fernieside knew City would bring the game to us, but the team from the south of Edinburgh never once panicked. Throughout the game City were kept to long range shots with the home side closing down quickly and trying to stop their better players from seeing too much of the ball. An ugly win, but good sides can do that, and today Fernieside took a step nearer becoming a really handy side.

Fernie took the lead on 11 minutes. a corner on the right from Niki Robertson, and it flew right in at the back post. Soon after, Fernie could have and should have added to the 1-0 lead. They had 2 or 3 great chances to tie the game up in the 1st half. It's fair to say that from here on in it was City who ran the game. Attack after attack, but Ryan Murray and Jamie Kelly were both outstanding sitting in the middle of the park for the home side. They got in the way of everything, battled hard and controlled the flow of the game by stopping City from playing any decent football.

A huge shout must go out to Liam Taylor in goal and his defence of Grant, Tweedy, Flett and Daykin, Outstanding the lot of them.

Up front Gibson worked hard against 3 defenders and Keith Shields and Wayne Johnson chased everything all afternoon. Ingles, McKenna and Bain came on and all 100% helped to achieve the end result.

A magnificent team effort to help Fernie progress into the next round.
