Redhall
Star kicked off their highly anticipated Scottish Cup campaign
in tremendous fashion, with an 8-0 demolishing of St.Andrew's
side, Hendies.
Questionable weather conditions
prior to Sunday's big match had manager Davie Winton pondering
whether or not the game would take place. Such doubts were
subsequently swept aside however, when the Redhall tornado
crossed over to the kingdom of Fife.
Extenuating circumstances meant that a number of the travelling
support did not take in the game's opening five minutes, and
therefore the first two goals of the match! The opening goal
came courtesy of front man Andrew Winton. Good work down the
right hand side, starting with the ever dependable Bobby
Dickson, saw the ball arrive at the feet of Alan Sheriff. The
Redhall hitman knocked the ball across the face of goal, leaving
Winton with the simplest of tasks, to bundle the ball over the
line.
The second goal followed soon after. This time, the home side
failed to clear a well delivered Redhall corner, which seen the
ball spin out to the feet of top goal scorer Alan Sheriff. The
prolific forward made no mistake in rifling past the Hendie's
stopper from six yards.
Additional pressure from the away side was piled on, frustrating
the shell-shocked home team, and it wasn't long before two
became three. This time, some neat play down the left channel by
full-back Craig Shepherd resulted in the ball being slotted into
the danger area. The opposing 'keeper made a fine initial block,
but could do nothing to stop Shepherd firing home at the second
attempt, putting Redhall well and truly in the comfort zone.
Despite further chances in the first period, the match would
remain at 3-0 until the second half. As the concluding half
commenced, Redhall continued their dominance, which eventually
led to a rapidly increasing margin in the score line. A further
brace from the abounding Alan Sherrif, and another double for
strike partner Andrew Winton, ensured a friendly scrap for the
match ball after the game. Added to these strikes was a sweetly
taken finish from wide-man Chris McArthur, who has also been in
fine goal scoring form this season.
The moment of the half came 20 minutes from the end. Stunning
football from midfield maestro Jamie Laing, lead to the ball
being presented at the feet of Dougie Paterson. The tireless
midfielder bombed into the penalty area, and attempted a
speculative effort which very nearly resulted in a wonder goal.
However, a bizzare piece of goalkeeping saw the Hendie's stopper
decide to volley the ball high in the air, allowing Andrew
Winton to perform a magnificent overhead kick to seal his first
hat-trick of the season in spectacular fashion.
The victory proved so compromising that there was even time for
midfielder Mark Kane to have an effort at goal, but he saw his
diving header steer inches wide of the post. It's fair to say in
summation, that the town of St.Andrews is the home of golf, and
not football for a reason. The competition that promised much
but delivered little for Star last season, has begun in
promising fashion, and the travelling fans were treated to
memorable day with some priceless moments along the way.
