Redhall
Star turned in arguably the performance of the season so far as
they swept aside Blackburn outfit Stewartfield 7-0 in the
Fosters Sunday Amateur Trophy.
A brace a
piece from strike partners Alan Sheriff and Andrew Winton,
followed by goals from Jamie Laing, Lyle Smith and Chris
McArthur, ensured Redhall would be in the hat for the
forthcoming round of 64.
The action
began with a typically lively opening, which led to the home
side grabbing an early advantage. After wide man Chris
McArthur's well placed corner, the ball broke to the feet of
Alan Sheriff. The big striker did superbly to swivel in the area
and drive the ball low and hard into the corner of the net.
Star doubled
their advantage soon after, this time the goal coming courtesy
of Andrew Winton. Much like the first, a well delivered cross
found a Redhall jersey in the penalty area, and Winton was on
hand to glance the ball home with his head into the far corner.
Controversial
refereeing delayed Redhall scoring the third, after a somewhat
lacklustre 10 minute period. Stand in centre half Neil Wilson
arrived in the penalty area for a Redhall corner, and
subsequently knocked the ball home from close range. The
referee, who otherwise had a good day, adjudged Wilson to have
been offside leaving the home side completely bewildered.
Redhall did
manage the third before the half-time interval however, and
again it would come from a set piece. Jamie Laing this time
swung in the corner, and the ball was met beautifully by the
head of midfield companion, Lyle Smith, who powered the ball
home from eight yards.
With one foot
in the next round, Redhall began to show slight signs of
complacency, as Stewartfield produced their best chance of the
match shortly after the restart. Some decent football from the
visitors opened up the solid Redhall rearguard, and the opposing
striker would have been celebrating a goal had it not been for a
genuine wonder save from stalwart 'keeper Mikey Duffin. The big
stopper did not have too much involvement in the match, but was
alert when called into action to keep his clean sheet intact.
This acted as
a wake up call for Star, and they began to show what they are
all about from there on in. Andrew Winton poked the ball home
from close range, before Chris McArthur continued his red hot
scoring streak with a well placed penalty kick to put the game
beyond reasonable doubt at 5-0.
Sheriff,
determined not to let his strike partner out do his goal scoring
exploits, went on to make it 6-0, after some tidy footwork down
the right flank by full-back Bobbi Dickson. The ball arrived at
the forward's feet, and the outcome was typical, as he picked up
his 27th
goal of the season.
As if the
performance required it, Jamie Laing was on hand to put the
gloss on a magnificent team effort. A knock down header from
Mark Kane, found his colleague in yards of space. The play maker
went on to unleash a powerful right foot volley into the top
corner of the net, producing what will surely be a contender for
the ever growing list for goal of the season.
Another top
class showing from Redhall left players and fans alike delighted
at full time, and they showed once more they are a force to be
reckoned with in this year's competition.
