Jordan Hill
smashes home from the edge of the box to put West Pilton Albion
2-1 ahead at Silverknowes
West Pilton Albion and Haddington Boys shared the points in this
Division 4 table top thriller at Silverknowes. This game swung
both ways with each side taking the lead on two occasions before
referee Patrick Munro blew for time in what became a difficult
encounter for the young whistler largely due to the building
noise from both touchlines as passions threatened to boil over.
But when both sets of supporters look
back on this game they will surely remember it for all the good
football, great goals and a deserved sharing of the points.
Substitute Ryan Vohra looked to have
sealed the points for the home side with just 11 minutes left to
play but Haddington deservedly scored an equaliser to maintain
their lead at the top of the table.
The game started very brightly with
Haddington taking the game to their Edinburgh hosts and they had
an early chance on just 2 minutes when Darly Kitt broke free on
the right but his effort was well saved by the excellent West
Pilton goalkeeper David Hogg. Hogg went on throughout this game
to show great handling and made a series of terrific saves.
But the young keeper could do nothing
just moments later when Haddington took the lead. Callum
Barson was sent clear in a quick breakaway on the left and
he calmly slotted the ball home into the bottom right hand
corner of the net to give the division four pacesetters an early
lead.
West
Pilton then started to dominate the midfield and made several
raids down the right hand flank with Callum Baird, Jamie
Robertson and Luke Buckley prominent in these attacks. One of
these started with the industrious Baird cleverly picking out
Buckley who then played in Dale Macalonie on the left. He
rounded goalkeeper Dean Brogan but his shot went inches wide.
The home side were threatening now
with every attack and they deservedly equalised on 9 minutes.
Jordan Skachill collected the ball in the middle of the
Haddington half and his 25 yard shot was lost in the low sun by
Brogan who let it slip through his fingers and into the waiting
net.
West Pilton Albion continued to press
and they went further ahead on 17 minutes with a terrific goal.
Luke Buckley was again the provider as he played the ball into
Jordan Hill and he sent a crashing shot flying past Dean
Brogan to give the home side a 2-1 advantage.
The game then went into a pulsating
period of end to end action as both sides attacked with pace.
Darly Kitt had another good chance to score when he was sent
clear on the right but David Hogg produced another brilliant
save closing the Haddington forward down quickly as he bore in
on goal. Then Jordan Skachill caused havoc in the visitors box
that eventually ended with a delightful chipped shot that just
squeezed over the top right hand corner of the goal. The same
player then missed a glorious chance to make it 3-1 when he hit
a shot from point blank range past the post.
Then
on the half time whistle Haddington looked to have got
themselves level. Sean Porteous beat the offside trap and was
clear on goal. Hogg closed him down but Porteous hit his shot
early. It looked all the way to be heading for the bottom corner
but it screwed just wide and West Pilton Albion went in 2-1
ahead at the break.
Half Time 2-1
This had been a fantastic game of
football with lots of chances and an abundance of skill on
display. And this continued into the second half. The first part
of which was dominated by Haddington Boys.
Driven on by captain, Hazim Kilic, who
alongside central defensive partner Conor Bowles had a quite
brilliant game, the visitors had wave after wave of attacks at
David Hogg's goal. Space seemed to simply open up every time the
Haddington midfield had the ball. Callum Barson was central to
most of the breaks as he destroyed the West Pilton right hand
side with flying attacks down the left wing.
Barson gave early warning of his
menace when he was sent clear on 43 minutes only to again see
Hogg quick from his line to thwart the danger. Then on 48
minutes a thundering free kick by Jason Rutherford flew inches
over.

On 50 minutes Haddington equalised. Callum Barson was
sent clear on the left and he calmly slotted the ball past Hogg
for a replication of his opening goal.
2 minutes later and it was 3-2 to the
visitors. Barson was sent clear yet again on the left. This time
however he passed the ball across the face of the goal where it
was knocked home by the sliding boot of Darly Kitt. This
sparked noisy celebrations and it led to a tousy final 25
minutes as the touchlines became ever noisier as the supporters
became increasingly involved in this thrilling contest.
It proved to be a testing time for
young referee Patrick Munro who I thought had a good game and
from where I was standing got most of the decisions right.
Inevitably however the noise affected the players who started to
add some meat to the tackles and on a couple of occasions became
involved with the touchline abuse. A great pity as this was a
terrific game of football.
The noise escalated further on the
hour when West Pilton came back into this game with a third
goal. The home side had three attempts in the box, none of which
were cleared properly and the raid ended with a brilliant chip
from Jordan Skachill over Dean Brogan and into the empty
net.
With
11 minutes left the home side were in raptures when they re-took
the lead through substitute Ryan Vohra. A through ball
was chased down by Jordan Skachill and he beat Brogan to the
ball to lift it goalwards. Vohra was first to react and his
forward momentum propelled him towards the ball which he smashed
home from 8 yards. Praise must go however to Jordan Hill who
first played the ball through with brilliant vision.
It looked like West Pilton had taken
the points. After having dominated most of the second half
Haddington found themselves behind but they got themselves back
on level terms with minutes remaining. A lung bursting 50 yard
run by defender Chris Peyton ended when he slipped the ball into
Darly Kitt who hit the ball home from close range to the
delight of the travelling support.
Haddington then had a great chance at
the death to take all three points. Kitt was the player with the
opportunity to get his hat-trick but his hard hit shot at the
back post was turned around for a corner by David Hogg to leave
the game all square.
Thankfully the game ended without any
further incident and both sets of players and coaches shook
hands on what was a great wee game of football by two decent
sides. It might have been an idea for the "supporters" to have
done so as well.
