equalises for Tweedmouth to make it 1-1 after just 4 minutes
Tweedmouth did the
double over Edinburgh City Colts at Sighthill this morning
winning comfortably by a 6-2 margin. The Berwick Upon Tweed side
had already beaten their Edinburgh opponents 5-2 on the border
and the bigger boys (and girl) from Berwick again had too much
for their higher league counterparts.
It will now be between Tweedmouth and
Duns Juniors to decide who wins the section and qualifies for
the quarter finals.
Summer had just about arrived as the
teams lined up to kick off and it took the home side less than a
minute to break the Tweedmouth rearguard. A simple through ball
was collected by Glen McKenzie in acres of space and
although he mishit his shot it found its way into the corner of
the net.
That goal woke the travel weary
visitors up and they had a great chance to equalise two minutes
later when Matthew Tait burst through the gaping holes in the
City backline but he smashed his shot wide of the post.
The equaliser was merely delayed a few
secondS however. A corner on the left wasn't cleared properly by
Edinburgh City and it was eventually bundled home by Sam
Morrison from inside the six yard box.
In
the opening exchanges a clear contrast started to emerge.
Tweedmouth had bigger and stronger players in their ranks,
especially at the back where they found it easy to clear any
emerging danger. And at the other end they had strong and
willing runners ready to latch onto clearances from defence.
City, on the other hand, were a smaller and less athletic
looking side and were simply out-muscled in most tussles.
However the home side were enjoying a
decent amount of possession and on 11 minutes Glen McKenzie
should have put his side ahead again. Keith Buckley broke
through 2 or 3 challenges before the ball broke off to McKenzie
but with the goalkeeper stranded he blasted over the bar with
the goal at his mercy.
Colts had another opportunity moments
later when a header by Keith Buckley was brilliantly tipped over
by Tweedmouth goalkeeper Aaran Grieve.
The visitors made them pay on 17
minutes when they went ahead. Tweedmouth broke away quickly up
the pitch and a strong surging run by Matthew Tait saw
him take the ball past the helpless Josh Cullerton in goal
leaving him the simple task of stroking the ball into the empty
net.
Matthew Tait and Luke Dickson had
further chances to score as Tweedmouth took control and the
shots started to rain in on the City goal. It was no surprise
when they went 3-1 ahead on 27 minutes. Another ball in the City
box wasn't cleared properly and after several attempts at goal
the ball eventually fell to Daniel Tindle who spun and
hit an unstoppable shot high into the right hand corner of the
net.
Three
minutes later and it was 4. A long ball from big Grant Leiper
sent Paul Rutherford in the clear and he made no mistake
shooting past the exposed Josh Cullerton.
Edinburgh City Colts had largely
fallen out of this game but they were given a lifeline just
before half time when Ewan Anderson scored directly from
a corner. A right footed inswinger was sent into the centre of
the goal where it slipped through Aaran Grieve's hands and into
the net.
Half Time 2-4
The second half started as it meant to
go on with both teams showing signs of tiredness on the huge
Sighthill pitch and chances were few and far between. City did
have a chance to pull another back on 46 minutes when Andrew
Herbert did well on the left edge of the box but his squared
ball across the face of the goal was too strong and the chance
was gone.
The game settled into a stalemate with
the home side unable to create anything of note and Tweedmouth
soaking up any pressure that City did manage to exert. But on 57
minutes they put the game beyond doubt when Paul Rutherford
scored his second of the game. A straightforward pass through
the centre of the City defence wasn't dealt with and Rutherford
had the simple task of slotting past the once again exposed
Colts' keeper.

With the clocking ticking down gaps
were starting to emerge all over the pitch and on 66 minutes
Matthew Tait took advantage of some space to score the goal
of the game. The ball fell to his feet about 25 yards out and he
smashed a high shot over the outstretched arms of Josh Cullerton
and into the roof of the net. A cracker.
There were two more chances before
this game was brought to a close. The first fell to Tweedmouth's
Ryan Tait who looked certain to score with an open goal but he
managed to shoot high and wide and then some good work in the
Colts' midfield saw the ball released to Ewan Anderson who made
a great surging run into the visitors box but hit his shot into
the side netting. |
