■Tyree
Wilson's thunderbolt crashes into the back of the net off the
bar to clinch the League Cup
A commanding second half performance
from Hutchison Vale, led by man of the match Scott Ritchie,
secured the League Cup against champions Edinburgh City.
2 goals from Chris MacLeod put Vale into a deserved second half
lead before the excellent Jordan Low pulled one back for City
with 5 minutes remaining.
But Tyree Wilson struck with just 2 minutes left to hand Hutchie
their second cup win in 10 days.
Saughton Enclosure was bathed in late spring sunshine for this
cup tie with a large support in attendance, particularly for
Edinburgh City. And it was the newly crowned league champions
that took hold of this match in the opening 30 minutes with
Hutchison Vale restricted to long range efforts which were
mainly of the wayward variety.
Edinburgh City were the more threatening side with some
excellent football being played particularly on the right hand
side with Jordan Low and Michael Wells dominating in the final
third of the pitch.
The champions had two good chances in the space of a minute
early on. On 10 minutes Nicholas Locke just failed to connect
with a low hard drive across goal from David Heggie and they
went closer a moment later when Jordan Low controlled the ball
well inside the box and shot towards the right hand post. The
ball wasn't collected properly by Jack Luby but the Hutchison
Vale goalkeeper saved at the second attempt as half the ball
made its way over the goal line.
It was 25 minutes before Vale had their first real opportunity
but Kieran Watson headed over from a good position after a
teasing corner was swung in by Chris MacLeod.
Hutchie
slowly started to work their way into this game with big number
5 Scott Ritchie becoming increasingly influential in the middle
of the park. Almost every ball that was played into that area
was won by Ritchie and this meant that Tyree Wilson and Chris
MacLeod begun to see more of the ball in forward positions.
After a decent opening 30 minutes Edinburgh City had fallen out
of the game a little with Hutchison Vale ending the half the
stronger side without troubling City keeper Dale Cornet.
Half Time 0-0
The game was a bit of a stalemate so far with not a huge amount
of good football being played. But within 5 minutes of the
re-start Hutchison Vale took the lead with a terrific goal.
Scott
Ritchie played the ball out to the right channel where the
constantly moving Chris MacLeod was lurking. The Vale
striker took a touch before lashing the ball past Dale Cornet
into the back of the net.
Hutchison Vale went onto to take a grip on this match with the
midfield winning any loose balls and the front pair pressing
hard on the City back four.
On the hour mark they had a great chance to make it 2-0 when
Tyree Wilson side-volleyed straight at the goalkeeper after a
wonderful floated ball by Andrew Douglas on the right. And a few
minutes later Wilson had another opportunity but this time
steered his shot side after a great free kick by Kenny
Aitchison.
But just as in the first half the dominating side started to see
less of the ball and Edinburgh City, driven on by Michael
Travis, started to look more threatening. On 69 minutes they had
a great chance to pull level when Jason Mackie's left foot shot
at the edge of the box went inches past the post.
With the clock ticking down and the game still on a knife edge
Hutchison Vale scored what looked like a certain winner with a
freak goal by Chris MacLeod. the Vale striker was 40
yards out on the right hand touchline when he hit a high looping
shot that bounced high inside the box and over City keeper Dale
Cornet into the empty net.

It looked game over but with 5 minutes left Edinburgh City
ensured a nervous few minutes when they pulled a goal back. A
free kick on the left was played into Nicholas Locke on the
right hand side. He made room for himself before hitting a shot
across the goalkeeper in a crowded box. Jack Luby saved well but
could only parry the ball into the path of Jordan Low who
calmly swept the ball into the net from 4 yards out.
The City supporters urged their players on to find an equaliser
and take this game into extra time but with two minutes left
their hopes were crushed when Tyree Wilson slammed a
killer third goal into the net off the underside of the bar to
make it 3-1 and end any lingering Edinburgh City hopes. |
