■Ryan Fisher scores what proved to be the
winning goal for Dalkeith Whites
Dalkeith Whites edged past a resilient Currie Boys Club in the
final of the Pilmar Smith Cup at Paties Road. A quite
brilliant goalkeeping performance from Chris Beattie kept them
at bay in the first half. And then, as Dalkeith tired during the
second period, Currie came storming back and almost forced extra
time.
Currie will also look back on a missed first half penalty before
Dalkeith went into the lead seconds later.
But it was Dalkeith that finished the strongest and probably
could have added to their tally in the closing moments of a
thrilling cup final.
A good crowd had turned up at Paties Road to roar on these two
young sides but the opening 15 minutes failed to ignite as
nerves seemed to get the better of both teams. In the early
exchanges however Tyron Mclean gave early warning of his skills
on the right wing with some lovely footwork whilst through the
middle big, bustling Ryan Fisher was also prominent. Currie were
more than competing however with Adrian Clark doing well at
right back and wee Scott Henderson showing some good midfield
play.
This game exploded into life in the 20th minute when Currie were
awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge on the right of the
box. But the Currie supporters cries turned from delight and
into anguish as Cem Usyal's kick evaded goalkeeper Craig
Pennycuick's dive to the left and crashed back off the base of
the post.
Dalkeith
had been let off the hook and how they made Currie pay for the
penalty miss. Within seconds they stormed up the left hand side
with Jason King taking the ball beyond the Currie back line
after being fed it wide by Ryan Fisher.. He floated a terrific
ball towards the back post where it was controlled by Wayne
Johnson before shooting low and hard into the centre of the
net.
Jason King then tested Currie goalkeeper Chris Beattie with a
brilliantly hit 25 yarder but the Currie No.1 was equal to it
and he twisted himself to tip the ball over the bar for a
corner.
The goal seemed to give Dalkeith extra momentum and the play was
now all towards the Currie goal. On 30 minutes Matthew Hunt went
on a mazy run of the nose bleed variety from deep in his own
half. The big left back dribbled past 4 Currie challenges but
his final shot just missed the left hand post as his legs tired
at the vital moment.
And then just before half time Chris Beattie produced yet
another magnificent save. This time it was Ryan Fisher who was
thwarted. The big Dalkeith centre forward showed brilliant
physical ability as he controlled the ball, held off challenges
from both sides and shot strongly from 16 yards. But Beattie
dived to his right and beat the ball away to safety.
Half Time 0-1
Currie started the second half well with a couple of forays up
the right hand side following quick breaks from their own half.
The best of these sent Scott Henderson free up on the right but
he shot wide of the upright.
But within 3 minutes of the restart Dalkeith scored a second
vital goal and it was a terrifically worked effort. The ball was
fed wide to Tyron McLean by Darren Main and he twisted and
turned on the ball before sending an inch perfect cross onto the
head of Ryan Fisher and he sent his header into the empty
net.
Dalkeith would have hoped to go on and kill this final off but
it was Currie who took the game back to their Midlothian
opponents
On 41 minutes they again broke quickly and this time it was
Scott Duffy that found himself in space on the right but a
defender recovered well to force a corner. Moments later they
were again up at the Dalkeith goal but Ewan Cooper's shot was
deflected away for a another corner.
But
Ewan Cooper made no mistake just seconds later when he
brought his team right back into this game. The big Currie
number 4 broke through the absent Dalkeith rearguard and slammed
the ball just inside Craig Pennycuick's right hand post.
Suddenly it was game on and with Dalkeith's left hand side
tiring Currie were finding loads of space on their own right.
The brilliant Tyron McLean was also being more carefully
shepherded by Ryan Finn who was showing terrific skills at left
back in the second period.
With
13 minutes to go Currie had a fantastic opportunity to draw
level when Scott Henderson found space again on the right after
a great cross field ball from the left hand side. He steadied
himself and seemed to almost pick his spot but the shot went
sailing over the bar and the chance was gone.
This pulsating game was now flying from end to end and most of
the crowd had left the "comfort" of the covered stand to take
their place around the pitch perimeter as they found themselves
more and more involved in what was going on. It made for a
terrific atmosphere as we entered the final 10 minutes.
Dalkeith then seemed to gain a second wind and started putting
Currie back under pressure at the back. With five minutes to go
they almost clinched it when Ryan Gibson showed some great skill
on the left wing before playing the ball onto the head of Ryan
Fisher but his effort went just wide. And then the same player
hit a shot from the edge off the box which crashed back off the
Currie bar.
With the crowd's nerves shredded Currie summoned up one final
chance. But the effort went sailing past the right hand post and
it was Dalkeith that were left to celebrate as referee Jim Sim
brought a thrilling evening to a close.
