Edinburgh City marched on into the
quarter final of the Scottish Cup and a home tie against fellow
South East Region side Hutchison Vale. The home side thoroughly
deserved their win at Craigmount but Clyde contributed to their
own downfall, conceding two penalties and scoring a second half
own goal.
The Pitch at
Craigmount was soft but definitely playable as Clyde arrived
with high hopes of an away win in this 5th round tie. But they
found themselves immediately on the back foot as Edinburgh City
took the tie to them from the kick off. And with only 4 minutes
on the clock centre forward Ntando Ntshangase almost put them
ahead as he ran onto a terrific through ball from wee Sean
Stewart but his right foot shot cracked off the right hand post
and away to safety.
But the goal that City's early domination
deserved was only delayed a few more minutes. Liam Ireland
dinked inside the box from the left wing and beat two defenders
as he wormed his way in on goal. Clyde eventually got a tackle
in but the ball broke free and Ireland was able to recover to
fire a low shot under the Clyde goalkeeper from the centre
of the penalty box.
Clyde
were all at sea as Edinburgh City prompted attack after attack
from midfield with Sean Stewart and Liam Ireland feeding their
hungry strike force. The young Edinburgh side had quickly
switched onto the dreadful Clyde offside tactic and were
successfully getting in behind the defence time after time.
But in 21 minutes, against the run of play,
Clyde got themselves back on level terms. The big Clyde centre
forward was the scorer as he was allowed time to
turn in the box and roll the ball into the far left hand side of
the net.
Back came City and 2 minutes later they were
awarded a penalty kick when a Clyde defender handled
inside the 6 yard box. Liam Ireland stepped up to slot
the ball away past the static goalkeeper.
As the game became increasingly noisy and
aggressive, led by the Clyde touchline, the Cumbernauld side
started to enjoy more territorial possession. And their centre
forward
almost pulled them level again when he beat City keeper Ruaridh
Gill to a through ball only to hit his shot over the bar from a
tight angle.
He had another chance on 27 minutes when he
lofted a loose ball after a Clyde corner onto the top of the
bar.
But
just as Clyde looked like they might get themselves back into
the game they conceded a second penalty kick. Ntando Ntshangase
was sent down the right channel where he was brought down. There was some confusion as both players lay
prone just inside the box but as the players recovered, referee
Billy Connor pointed to the spot. It was clearly a foul but it
looked just outside the box. Cue noisy protestations from the
Clyde sidelines, but amid all the noise Liam Ireland
calmly stepped up to knock the ball home for a terrific first
half hat-trick.
Half Time 3-1
The half time teamtalk from Clyde was clearly
designed to whip up some "anger" and "emotion" from the young
players. And communicated to them in a loud enough way for it to
be heard on the home side's touchline. To be honest there was
too much noise, anger, aggression, long balls and offside
trapping from Clyde when everyone at Craigmount must have
expected more. The extensive coaching team also felt the need to
consistently ball instructions to almost every player on the
pitch rather than just letting the players play.
However, whatever their methods, it seemed to
have some effect as Clyde pulled one back almost immediately
from the restart. A long throw in from the left was allowed to
bounce in the box rather than be attacked by a defender and a
Clyde player stepped forward to slam the ball into the
roof of the net.
The game was back on a knife-edge but
Edinburgh City always looked dangerous on the attack and on 44
minutes they restored their 2 goal lead. It was another soft
goal from the Clyde point of view as Ntando Ntshangase
hit a fairly easy shot towards goal that the goalkeeper
allowed to squirm under his body and into the net.
The young Clyde keeper showed his ability
midway through the second half as we witnessed two terrific
goalkeeping saves in a minute. First up was Edinburgh City's
Ruaridh Gill who reacted brilliantly to a point blank flick from
a Clyde corner. And then as City swept upfield the Clyde number
one threw
himself to his left to palm a fierce shot from Ntshangase around
the left hand post.
Edinburgh City were in full control of this
match as Clyde tried hard to find a way back into the game but
found the home side's defence in no mood to give anything
further away. Then on 59 minutes Edinburgh City secured their
passage through into the quarter finals.
A through ball from Sean Stewart was a little
too long this time for Ntshangase and defender Daniel Hart
stepped into to pass the ball back to the goalkeeper. But as
the ball bobbled its way back the Clyde number one allowed it to
slip under his right foot studs and into the net.
It
was an awful moment for the young lad but it was compounded by a
quite terrible piece of man-management by the Clyde coaches as
he was substituted immediately and was left on the bank to the
side of the pitch, alone with his head in his hands.
Edinburgh City put more shine on the
scoreline with four minutes to go when substitute, Ross
Clarke, ran onto another great through ball to roll it
coolly past the replacement keeper and into the bottom right
hand corner.
Full Time 6-2
Much more was expected from Clyde and for
whatever reason they just didn't deliver. Much of the play was
tactical as opposed to footballing skill and ability with long
punts forward and a defensive offside trap being at the centre
of it. The coaching personnel marauded up and down the touchline
barking orders which quite clearly were not having the desired
impact on the young side.
Edinburgh City put on a fine display with
their only frailty being a tendency towards indecision with high
balls into the centre of the goalmouth. Liam Ireland had a fine
game with an excellent first half hat-trick. The two full backs,
Alan Kotyrbase and Declan MacIver always took the ball from
their goalkeeper to set up attacks and in midfield Sean Stewart
was eager to play clever balls forward at every opportunity.
Ross Clarke could also have scored a hat-trick after he came on
as a second half substitute. Laurie Bertoia also had a fine
second half.
It
is hard to single anyone out from a great team performance but
their big centre forward Ntando Ntshangase was always
involved, scored one goal, held the ball up well, drifted right
and left and went off to a deserved ovation 10 minutes from
time. Ntando picks up The Pink Man of the Match award for this
week.
