Hutchinson slams the ball past Adam Shaw with 5 minutes left to
make it 4-4
Edinburgh City came back twice from
two goals down to keep themselves within touching distance of
their club counterparts Edinburgh City '93 at the top of
Division 1. Ryan Hutchinson scored the equalising goal with just
5 minutes remaining to give his side a deserved share of the
points in a pulsating encounter at Sighthill this afternoon.
There was no sign of the winter weather that swept through
Edinburgh in the morning and with the sun shining brightly the
scene was set for a good game of football between two of the top
U15 sides. However the opening exchanges between these two sides
from the Edinburgh City Boys' Club set up were tame and tense.
But this was no indication of what was to come after the game
exploded into life on 19 minutes and never let up from that
point on.
Up until that point the closest either side came to a goal was a
side footed volley by Michael Travis from a Mark Macconnell
corner. The ball just missing the top right hand corner.
On 19 minutes '93 took the lead. A long ball forward was
expertly controlled by the excellent Jamie Devlin and he shot
coolly past Dale Cornet to put his side one up.
'93 had another opportunity to score just three minutes later
when the City goalkeeper failed to properly collect a cross ball
but Ryan Ma couldn't connect well enough and the danger was
cleared.
On 28 minutes City were awarded a free kick close to the right
hand corner flag and with the wind behind him, Mark Macconnell
floated a high cross that blew over the defence, and goalkeeper
Adam Shaw, and into the net. A freak goal but celebrated noisily
nevertheless.
But the
lead was only to last three minutes.'93 forced a couple of
corners on the left hand side and Steven Harley was on hand at
the front post to neatly flick the ball past the stranded City
keeper and into the net. A lovely worked goal.
'93 were decent value for their lead at this stage. They had
more of the ball in the first half and the momentum of the game
seemed to be with them. Solid at the back they appeared more
energetic than their City counterparts and possibly could have
gone in more than one up.
Half Time 2-1
The second half opened with more energy than the first and City
tried to take the game to '93 and grab the initiative of them.
But it was '93 that increased their lead on 48 minutes when
another corner, this time on the right hand side, wasn't cleared
properly. The ball bobbled about the six yard box for several
seconds before being lashed home by defender Jamie Morrison
lurking at the back post.
Suddenly City found themselves facing defeat and a 7 point gap
opening up at the top of the table. But they were given a
lifeline on 56 minutes when referee Mike Smith awarded a penalty
when Ryan Hutchinson was brought down by goalscorer Jamie
Morrison. Hutchinson dusted himself down before dispatching the
ball past the helpless Adam Shaw.
City
were back in the game but within four minutes '93 had restored
their 2 goal margin. A free kick inside the '93 half was pumped
forward over the City defence where it found the onrushing Jamie
Devlin and he calmly lifted the ball over the head of the
advancing City goalkeeper and into the empty net.
It looked like the game was beyond City again but they bounced
back almost immediately with a terrific goal. Nicholas Locke had
begun to look very lively on the right hand side and he jinked
his way towards the bye line before cutting the ball back for
Craig Healey and he made no mistake in shooting low and hard
past Shaw.
City suddenly seemed to have the game within their grasp again
and they started to put '93 under more and more pressure.
Nicholas Locke and David McNeil were having more of an influence
on this game now and '93 were struggling to retain the ball for
any significant period. Each time the ball was cleared it seemed
to be fed back out wide to Locke who was now tormenting the '93
left hand side.
With 10 minutes remaining the City pressure almost paid of when
a brilliant cross by Craig Tulloch found Callum Irvine in acres
of space 8 yards from goal but his header bounced just wide of
the right hand post.
Then on 72 minutes City thought they had equalised but a
fantastic double save by Adam Shaw kept them out.
The
initial shot from Mark Macconnell was parried out into the path
of Craig Healey and his first time volley seemed destined for
the net before Shaw twisted his body and somehow deflected the
ball onto the bar. A magnificent save that brought applause from
around the pitch.
But the momentum was now all with City and they piled the
pressure onto the '93 goal. With five minutes left on the clock
they got the goal that their second half play deserved. David
McNeil was the architect evading several '93 challenges as he
broke into the box before playing in Ryan Hutchinson who slammed
the ball past Shaw from 12 yards.
With a minute remaining City almost snatched the winner. Jason
Mackie stole in at the back post to steer a header down towards
the bottom corner but Shaw was quickly across his line to clear
the ball as it bounced towards goal.
Then with the final attack of the game '93 had a chance to take
the points themselves but goalkeeper Dale Cornet blocked the
shot with his face to ensure the points were shared.
Full Time 4-4
'93 will be disappointed not to have won this game having twice
been 2 goals ahead but City came storming back and their never
say die attitude saw them take a deserved share of the spoils
and kept them on the coat tails of their club neighbours.
This was a terrific game of football played in an excellent
spirit but as '93 coach, John Burns, pointed out, the happiest
team at the end will probably be Eskmills who lie in third place
but with some games in hand.
