■No. 9 Sean
Alexander scores Edina Hibs' winning goal to put his side into
the Steve Maskrey Cup Final
Edina Hibs survived an early onslaught
from Currie to secure their place in the Steve Maskrey Cup
Final. The match was switched from Currie to the Jewel after
Saturday's heavy rain but it was the wind that was the main
influencing factor in this game.
And it was Edina Hibs that adapted to the conditions better with
a commanding second half performance that allowed them to shade
this entertaining semi-final tie.
The Jewel looked in almost perfect condition, despite the
torrential rain over the past 24 hours, and with the sun shining
everything was set for this match between two of the third
division's top sides. The wind, however, was blowing straight
down the pitch and it was Currie that carried this behind them
in the first half.
And it was almost a whirlwind start by the side from West
Edinburgh as they created four excellent chances in the opening
10 minutes that could have finished this tie.
Twice within the third minute, Ewan Castle found himself in
space on the right hand side. His first effort crashed off the
bar and the rebound was sent high and wide. And moments later
his shot only just drifted past the left hand post.
Then
it was the turn of Greg Lobban. He found himself in a similar
position to Castle on 8 minutes but again screwed his shot just
past the left post. And then two minutes later he was sent clear
and, as the referee waved aside offside claims, he shot straight
at Edina goalkeeper Ross Paterson who saved well and the ball
was turned away for a corner.
It was a breathtaking start from Currie and at this stage of the
game Edina were finding it difficult to get out of their own
half. Partly due to the wind and partly due to the play of the
Currie players.
But Edina Hibs slowly started to drag themselves into this game
and their midfield began to see more and more of the ball.
Darryn Gold was central to much of their play alongside captain
Wayne Simpson in the middle of the park.
On 20 minutes Edina had their first real opening when centre
forward, Sean Alexander, chased down a through ball that was
held up by the wind and in the 50/50 race with goalkeeper Mark
Hurst it was the Currie number one that just got to the ball
first. But Hurst was hurt in the clash and despite initially
looking to have recovered he went down seconds later and had to
be replaced in goal by defender Andrew Steiner.
It transpired that Hurst had sustained a long gash in his leg
and was taken immediately to hospital.
Stenier was tested twice in a minute by Edina as they continued
to enjoy more of this match. Firstly it was the ever more
threatening Sean Alexander who turned well on the edge of the
box but his shot was comfortably saved by the replacement
keeper. And then he was out quick to smother a cross from the
right after good work by Ryan Johnston.
Then on 32 minutes Sean Alexander had the best chance of the
game so far. The ball ricocheted into his path as he stepped
into the box but he sclaffed his shot wide of the post when a
goal looked on the cards.
Half Time 0-0
The second half started evenly but it was only 5 minutes old
when Edina Hibs took the lead. A free kick was awarded 22 yds
out in a central position and Ryan Johnston stepped up to
curl the wind assisted ball into the bottom left had corner and
out of the reach of the diving Andrew Steiner.
Ten minutes later and Edina Hibs doubled their lead and it was a
terrific goal. Darryn Gold was now totally commanding in the
centre of the park and he won the ball before releasing Calum
Young on the left. Young did brilliantly and sent in a wonderful
ball towards the back post where it was met by Sean Alexander
to side volley coolly into the empty net.
But their two goal margin was only there for a couple of minutes
when Currie pulled themselves back into this game. A free kick
was delivered into the edge of the box, where Edina were playing
a very high defensive line. The ball was then sent towards goal
where it hit the right hand post and it was the Currie attack
that reacted quickest with Callum Jackson on hand to hit
the ball past recovering keeper Ross Paterson.

Suddenly, with just under 20 minutes to go it was game on but
Currie struggled to get their legs up the park against the
strong wind and it was Edina Hibs that could have stretched
their lead as the game cantered towards full time.
It was replacement keeper, Andrew Steiner, who kept the
scoreline down with a series of saves. Firstly as the feet of
Alexander and then a full stretch tip around the post from a
tremendous drive from Cameron Reid.
Urged on by both sidelines, all the players went full tilt as
the seconds wound down, but no more goals were scored and it was
a jubilant Edina Hibs side that go forward to meet Eskmills in
the Final.
Full Time 2-1
It was a great team performance from Edina Hibs. I covered a
game for this side back in September when they went down to
Salvesen in the Scottish Cup. The progress since that game is
remarkable and they look an increasingly strong side with some
good football players.
Darryn Gold caught the eye in the middle of the park alongside
Wayne Simpson who put in a great second half shift to drive his
team forward. Up front Sean Alexander always looked dangerous as
did sidekick Calum Young and it was this pair that conjured up
the winning goal. Josh Lawrie looks a great wee footballer and
John Fyne marshalled his defence superbly.
Currie will be disappointed they didn't convert at least one of
their early chances, when they were well on top. During that
period, Ewan Castle looked like he was going to run riot and big
Ross Edwards had a good first half. At the back, Alex Smith had
a terrific game before eventually succumbing to the strong Edina
attack in the second half. And tiny Jamie Tomlinson had a great
game on the left hand side, looking deceptively strong.
A big well done as well to stand in goalkeeper, Andrew Steiner,
who had a brilliant game and kept Edina at bay especially
towards the end of the game. And let's hope regular number one,
Mark Hurst, makes a speedy recovery.
But
for this week's Pink Man of the Match we are going to go for
Daniel Graves. I thought he gave a terrific full back
performance on the right hand side. Always alert, passing the
ball forward, clearing his lines when required and as tough a
tackler as I have seen this season. But always fair with it.
Alongside his defensive colleagues he was part of the foundation
for Edina to go on and win this game and Currie enjoyed very
little success down the left hand side where Daniel was in total
command. |
