Edinburgh City Colts Under 15's continued
their giant killing act in the quarter final of the John
McConnell Memorial Cup with a fantastic win against 2nd Division
Tynecastle Colts.
It's the latest big name scalp on a fantastic run that has seen
them beat 2nd Division Leith Athletic Colts & 1st Division
Dunbar United Colts in the earlier rounds.
On a perfect day for football at Sighthill, City came flying out
the traps & their performance in the first 20 minutes of the
half was simply outstanding. They were first to every challenge
& their passing football was a joy to watch.
It wasn't long before their first chance was created. Chris
Graham found himself free on the edge of the box and his goal
bound shot was just deflected over the bar. From the resultant
corner, Ciaran McGuire's inswinging cross hit the bar & after an
almighty scramble Tynecastle's goalie pulled of the first of
many great saves.
It was non-stop pressure from City and the bar again came to
Tynecastle's rescue following a great move & shot from Darren
Pennycuick.
City finally got the goal their efforts deserved when Chris
Graham's corner was superbly headed in to the Tynecastle net by
David Hutchison.
As City tired Tynecastle came more into the game & Adam Moore
in the City goal was called on to pull off some great saves of
his own. The 2nd half was a much more open affair with both
teams creating plenty of chances. Both defences were under a lot
of pressure but both held firm with some great defending, in
particular Liam O'Donnell's & Alan Reid's tackling for City was
outstanding.
City came close again when yet
another corner came back of the bar & just when it seemed easier
to score from the rebound, Alan Reid blasted it high over the
bar.
As we
entered the final 10 minutes of the game it was backs to the
wall for the City players who by this time were dead on their
feet. However Jordan Lock somehow found the energy to run almost
the entire length of the pitch to fire a fantastic shot which
agonisingly for him & his team mates cannoned back of the bar.
The large
crowd that had turned out to support City couldn't take much
more, their nerves were in tatters & when Tynecastle's forward
found himself free in the City box in the last minute, they
feared the worse. The shot was goal bound all the way until
City's goalie Adam Moore some how got his hand to it, to pull of
the save of the match, if not the season.
The final
whistle sounded & no one could quite believe that City had
pulled of yet another fantastic result.
This was a great advert for
youth football with both teams contributing to a fantastic game.
