Gorgie Hearts Too Strong
For Dickens
Gorgie Hearts SAFC eased into the second round of the league
cup today after a stunning 4-0 win against Dickens
Waterfront.
Gorgie kicked off the game hoping to finally get their first
win of 2008 and from the outset Gorgie looked the stronger
with a series of cracking passes which left the Dickens
midfield standing and it didn’t take long for Gorgie to
create the first chance and test the Dickens keeper.
Dickens were finding it
difficult to cope with the speed and accuracy of Gorgie's
movement which saw some fantastic play from Curro Cervera,
Carlos Mendoza and Chris Mac. Mac, in his new position in
midfield, made numerous teasing runs at the defence and the
Gorgie faithful started to believe it would only be a matter
of time before they broke the deadlock.
At around the 10-15
minute mark Gorgie's hard work paid off when a free kick
from the touchline between the centre circle and the penalty
box was floated in beautifully from Oli Li to meet Andy
Alexander’s head and nestle in the back of the Dickens' net.
More great football
followed with Chris Mac being instrumental at holding the
ball up and releasing the Gorgie attack. It was one of these
plays that led to the second when Carlos Mendoza made a
jinking run past several players to slot a perfectly
weighted ball in the path of Curro to rattle the ball home
down past the keeper’s right hand side.
The first half was for
the most part dominated by the Gorgie side but there was a
few heart in mouth moments when a normally simple clearance
by keeper Scott Walker went wrong and left the Dickens
forward yards from goal with a simple tap in to bring them
back into the game but he somehow managed to put the ball
clear across goal and out for a goal kick. Walker, however,
made up for it with a fantastic save when a Dickens player
came one on one and placed the ball down to the left but the
goalkeeper read it perfectly and pulled of a great save to
take Gorgie into the break 2-0 up.
Half time 2-0
The second half began
with Gorgie looking to build on their two goal lead and
Dickens trying to get back into the game and Gorgie were at
risk of becoming complacent with Dickens starting to put
together a few passes and look like they may threaten.
However this period was
short lived when another cross ball met with top goal scorer
Andy Alexander and he made it 3 and got his second of the
afternoon.
Fresh legs in the form
of Michael Stevenson for Andy Hughes and Craig Watson for
Shaun Schofield gave Gorgie a boost with Stevenson putting
great pressure on the Dickens defence and it was one of
these moments of pressure that he found himself one on one
with the keeper and a horrible bauble right when he pulled
the trigger and sent the ball sailing well over the bar.
The half rolled on with
Gorgie having a few chances to add to the scoreline and when
a high ball began to fall towards the Dickens keeper, Carlos
Mendoza threw his head up before the keeper could get hold
of it and it fell into the net for a goal he most definitely
deserved.
There were some great
individual performances for Gorgie and with Steven Hunter
making his debut with a solid performance at the back the
only downside to the whole day was the injury to Gorgie
captain Oli Li who went down with a jolt to the knee but
doesn’t look anything too serious.
A fantastic day overall
for Gorgie and manager Davie Kinross could not hide his
pleasure after the game for leading his side to a 4-0 win
which in all honesty could have been a lot more.
