ESAFA EDINBURGH CUP
GORGIE HEARTS 4 1 PAVILION

Gorgie Hearts christened their new home park at Millerhill with a 4-1 victory against Pavilion in the Edinburgh Cup when four very good goals were the difference between Gorgie and their higher league opposition.

The game began with Gorgie passing the ball very well and creating all sorts of angles which the Pavilion players couldn’t get close to. However, when Pavilion did get the ball they looked dangerous going forward and with only a minute or so on the clock Chris MacMichael was forced to clear a ball on his own goal line. The pressure was short lived  and Gorgie took the lead when a free kick five yards from the left corner of the box was struck cleanly by Curro Cervera and curled into the top left corner and left the goalie flapping at thin air.

Gorgie kept the ball down and continually tried to break the Pavilion defence down but failed to make their possession count in the final third of the park. This failure to deliver the killer pass meant Pavilion had a real chance to get back into the game. That was until a flick from Carlos Mendoza on the left hand edge of the Pavilion box found its way over the keeper to land in the bottom right of the goal for a 2-0 lead that lasted until half time.

The second half continued much the way the first half ended and a lack of urgency cost Gorgie dearly when a Pavilion attack led to Scott Walker rushing out his goal and committed himself taking the ball from the oncoming attacker. However, the striker managed to cleverly knock the ball past him and a rush of Pavilion players managed to scramble the ball into the net.

With this cup tie most definitely back on, Gorgie searched for yet another to seal this game and with around 20 minutes to go it came. Another stunning goal, this time by Andy Hughes running down the left side at the Pavilion defence, pulling the trigger from around  30 yards and the goalie could only stand and watch as it glided into the top corner of the net.

Pavilion didn’t give up. with Scott Walker having to pull off a couple of great saves which kept the home team's two goal cushion intact. Centre half Greg Massie also made a great clearance of the line which showed the determination of the Gorgie back line.

With seven or eight minutes left on the clock Chris MacMichael held the ball up with his back to goal just past the half way line and hit the ball over his head to land perfectly for Sam Molubi to chip the oncoming keeper to seal Gorgie's place in the next round. A good result for Gorgie, after which secretary Chris Smith commented, "this result shows that despite not performing to the best of our ability we are capable of posting a good score against a higher league side."

Gorgie Hearts: Scott Walker, Oli Li, Rab Hardie (Andy Hughes), Greg Massie, Steven Hunter, Carlos Mendoza, Curro Cervera, Chris Macmichael, Michael Stevenson (Craig Watson), John Storrie (Sam Molubi), Andy Alexander
