■Musselburgh's big centre half, Chris Moffat, turns away
to celebrate putting his side 2-0 ahead
Musselburgh Windsor's U14s put on a
fine show at Pinkie this morning and ran out worthy 6-1 winners
against Peebles in this Division One match. The East Lothian
side were stronger throughout and although Peebles tried hard to
rally in the second half, the end result was never really in
doubt.
This result continues Windsor's
excellent league form as they emerge as the main challengers to
Tynecastle and Bonnyrigg Rose in the U14 age group.
Musselburgh started
the game with the strong wind blowing in their favour and they
took the match to their Midlothian opponents from the kick off.
They were enjoying some early success down the right wing, in
particular, with Jamie Todd seeing a lot of the ball.
In
seven minutes Windsor carved up the first real chance of the
game when Todd skipped down the right flank and sent a brilliant
ball across the face of the Peebles goal but there was no one to
finish the move off and the chance was gone.
But two minutes later Musselburgh took
the lead that their early play deserved. The architect was Alan
Clark, who went onto to have a magnificent game for 'Burgh. From
midway inside his own half he sent a quite wonderful ball
through the centre of the Peebles defence for centre forward
Jack Kennedy to run onto. Kennedy took the ball forward a
further 20 yards before despatching it coolly past Gregor Amos
in the Peebles goal.
Peebles had a chance to pull
themselves level when Saul Schulz Keith created space for
himself on the left edge of the Musselburgh box and he sent a
clever low ball towards the back post where Fraser Smith saved
at the feet of Kieran Clyde.
But that attack from Peebles was all
too rare and it was Musselburgh who had taken a complete grip on
this match.
On 16 minutes they almost made it 2-0 when their big centre
half, Chris Moffat, met a corner from the right with his
head but it flew over the bar from close range. But he made no
mistake a few moments later.
A corner on the left was swung in well
by Alan Clark and after a challenge in the air the ball fell
kindly to Moffat who toe poked the ball home from the edge of
the six-yard box to make it 2-0 after 21 minutes.
Straight from the restart Peebles lost
the ball and Windsor played it forward where it was cleared for
yet another corner. The resultant kick was flicked goalwards but
this time Sukraij Singh was on the back post to head it off the
line.
But
the third goal was only delayed a few more minutes and what a
goal it was. Peebles allowed Musselburgh to play the ball around
the edge of the box where it was eventually fed into Jack
Kennedy. He then hit an unstoppable left foot shot high into
the top left hand corner. Peebles number one Gregor Amos did
well to get a hand to it but the ball was hit too powerfully for
him to have any chance of keeping it out. A terrific goal.
That ended the goal feast for the
first half. A half that Musselburgh totally dominated with some
excellent passing football. Peebles came into the game a little
after the third goal but they weren't really creating any clear
cut chances and the Musselburgh defence was coping comfortably
with anything the visitors could muster.
Half Time 3-0
Peebles started the second half much
more brightly with Saul Schulz Keith, Thomas Penman and Brad
Lochrie much more involved. They were having some success down
the right hand side with Jamie Boyd seeing a lot of the ball and
in 40 minutes they were awarded a free kick on the right edge of
the Windsor box. The kick was floated in but easily cleared by
Musselburgh who mounted a quick counter attack.
The ball was played quickly up the
right hand side but Peebles were short with an intercepting
backpass and Taylor McKillop nipped into to play the ball back
to Jamie Todd who smashed home from 10 yards.
It was a little unlucky on Peebles who
had threatened to pull a goal back. And suddenly they found
themselves 4 down with most of the second half still to play.
Musselburgh's second half substitute
Chris Jamieson was proving a real handful for Peebles on the
right hand side with several strong runs. He almost scored on 44
minutes when another foray into the Peebles rearguard ended with
a vicious shot across goal that only just missed the left hand
post with the goalkeeper at full stretch.
Another great run by Jamieson a few
moments later ended with Jack Kennedy almost snatching his
hat-trick as his head flick only narrowly squeezed past the
post.
On
50 minutes Chris Jamieson's fresh legs eventually paid dividends
for Musselburgh when they went five up. Another run up the right
resulted in a cut back to Taylor McKillop who passed the
ball into the net from the right of the box.
To Peebles credit they never gave up
and were increasingly more and more in this match. They started
to enjoy a bit more of the ball in the centre of the park and
were trying to feed the ball towards the right hand side to
Jamie Boyd.
On 57 minutes, Boyd had a great chance to pull one back when he
was fed into the right hand channel after great work by Saul
Schulz Keith but his shot just missed the left hand post with
the Musselburgh goalkeeper, Fraser Smith, beaten.
A minute later and they had another
chance. This time it was Scott Martin who had the opportunity to
pull one back but again the shot went just inches past the left
hand post.
But
with 8 minutes remaining Peebles scored the goal that their
pressure deserved. The ball was fed down the right hand side
again to Jamie Boyd whose ball across goal was played back into
the path of Thomas Penman who hit it home from 10 yards.
However, after having worked so hard
to get that goal, Peebles conceded a sixth almost immediately
when Fraser Mackinnon slammed home for Musselburgh from
the centre of the box.
Musselburgh had chances to score more
but two excellent saves by Gregor Amos kept them out. His best
came on 68 minutes when he denied Musselburgh at point blank
range and with strong enough hands to push the shot behind for a
corner.
Full Time 6-1
Peebles tried hard in the second half
to break down a strong Musselburgh back four and had good
performances from Thomas Penman and Brad Lochrie in the middle
of the park. Jamie Boyd did well for them on the right hand side
and Saul Schulz Keith showed good composure and touch up front.
At the back, James Parker and Elliott Winyard showed good
ability and never resorted to simply punting the ball up the
park. Gregor Amos had a fine game between the posts, having no
chance with any of the goals.
Musselburgh were strong throughout and
look to have a very capable team. This side are still in the
Scottish Cup and along with Tynecastle and Bonnyrigg Rose will
be challenging for the league title, despite their relatively
small squad.
Chris Moffat had a fine commanding game at the back and up front
Jack Kennedy led the line brilliantly along with the excellent
Alan Clark. In midfield, Hamish Hunter and Jamie Todd had solid
games and Chris Jamieson was rampant on the right hand side in
the second 35 minutes.
It
is a tight decision for the Pink Man of the Match but we are
going to go for Taylor McKillop in the middle of
the park. Great touch and awareness, Taylor cleverly created
space for himself with the ball at his feet and was a constant
link between defence and attack. And he got himself a goal into
the bargain. A great all round display from the Musselburgh
number 7. |
