Edinburgh City U19’s qualify for the first East of Scotland
final of the season in a nervy and tense affair at City Park
on Sunday.
On a heavy pitch, it was Spartans who were first to
threaten. It began with a cross from the right hand side of
the pitch which was swung in to the area. The City defence
failed to clear their lines and the result was a shot from
Spartans top goal scorer, Danny Forbes, from the edge of the
18 yard box which crashed of the post to safety.
Chances were few and far between, with both defences on top
of their opponents. In one of the better passing movements
in the game, City forward, Euan Miller broke down the left
and fired in a shot which was well saved by the Spartans
goalkeeper, Stevie Greens.
City were to shock their city rivals with 2 goals in the
space of a minute just before half time.
It was Euan Miller who opened the scoring after a neat
passing move, when he found his way in to the left hand side
of the box to slot a shot past the Spartans goalkeeper.
More was to follow when straight from the kick off, City
gained possession and worked their way down the Spartans
left. Miller again found space free on the left hand side
of the box to calmly lob Stevie Greens in the Spartans
goal.
In an uneventful second half neither team really threatened
to add to the scoreline. The only highlights were a
cracking right foot shot from Spartans, Johnny Downie, which
just missed the right hand post. Ross Guthrie also
threatened with a twist and turn in the box to unleash a
right foot drive which cleared the crossbar.
The game petered out with City now awaiting their opponents
from the Tynecastle v Whitehill Welfare clash. The final is
to be contested on 16 April 2008 at Herriott Watt playing
fields.
