PRESIDENT'S CUP FIRST ROUND
TOP OF THE TOON 0 1 GORGIE HEARTS

Gorgie enjoyed a 1-0 victory against higher league opposition in the 1st Round of the President's Cup when they travelled to meet Top of the Toon in Loanhead.

The game started briskly and an early Gorgie attack left Andy Alexander one-on-one with the keeper and he calmly flicked the ball into the Toon goal at the near post. In a tightly fought contest, which was played in great spirits, both teams had chances. The first half was played at a high tempo with Top of The Toon trying to get back into the game and Gorgie trying to build on their lead.

However, the momentum was halted 15 minutes before half time when Darren Russell turned awkwardly and was left reeling in agony on the pitch. At this point the game was halted until the player was taken to hospital with what was later found to be a broken ankle.

When the game restarted, it was at a slower pace but Gorgie pushed forward and chances continued to be created by some fantastic runs by Shaun Schofield down the middle and new singing Caleb Stick holding the ball up very well up front to try and play Andy Alexander in on goal time and again.

The second half started where the first left off but as the half went on a pair of fresh legs was brought on in the form of Paul Harvey for Carlos Mendoza.  Harvey did particularly well at halting what was becoming a string of Toon attacks as they fought to get that elusive equalising  goal.

As Gorgie started to believe that they have pulled off a cup shock, the Toon attack got the break of the ball and they were left one on one with Gorgie keeper Scott Walker, who  pulled off a phenomenal save to tip the ball over the bar. Chris Muir showed his considerable experience in handling a well disciplined game that showed the enormous sportsmanship, albeit marred by an unfortunate injury to Darren Russell.
