BONNYRIGG ROSE |

Tynecastle's Jamie Forsyth slams home his
side's opener against Bonnyrigg Rose
Two of the top U14 sides
went head to head at Saughton this morning and it was the home side that
took the spoils and progressed into the third round of the Willie Bauld
Cup.
After a goalless first
half, Tynecastle stepped up a gear in the second and went on to
deservedly win 2-0. Indeed if it hadn't been for an outstanding
performance from Bonnyrigg goalkeeper, Robert Dickson, then the margin
could have been wider.
Both of these sides have
started the season very well so it was always going to be a good
benchmark for the players and coaches to see how this game played out.
In the end it will be the Tynecastle outfit that will be most pleased
with the outcome with Bonnyrigg perhaps a little more work to do to
match their city counterparts.
The
opening half was a close affair with little in the way of chances.
Bonnyrigg were enjoying some success on the right wing through Scott
Dunlop and big Ryan Somerville was doing his best to hold the ball up
front and bring his midfielders into the game. Defensively Rose were
quite comfortably handling most of the attacks on goal that Tynecastle
could muster but most of the Edinburgh side's work was being done in
defence and midfield. Josh Riddell had several surging runs from the
right back position and Fergus Lockhart was doing his best to create
things from central midfield.
But it took fully 16
minutes for the first real chance to be created and it fell to
Tynecastle. A sweeping move from defence into midfield and across the
pitch from left to right saw the ball arrive at the feet of Taylor
Aitchison on the right hand edge of the box. But he could only look on
as his effort flew inches past the right hand upright.
Two minutes later and an
error by Tynecastle's number one almost led to the opener for Bonnyrigg.
A high looping ball was dropped by Michael Ross in the Tynie goal but
Chris Kane could only lift the ball over the bar from 12 yards.
The remainder of the half
was played out without many other chances being made. There was lots of
good passing and no shortage of committed tackling and defending but the
half was to end goalless.
Half Time 0-0
5 minutes into the second
half and Tynecastle got the opening goal. A corner on the left hand side
wasn't dealt with by the Bonnyrigg Rose defence and Tynecastle were
allowed to head the ball back into the heart of the box to Jamie
Forsyth. He still had heaps to do though with his back to goal but
he controlled the ball, swivelled and hooked a cracking shot high past
the helpless Robert Dickson. It was a terrific finish but Bonnyrigg will
be disappointed at how much time Tynecastle had to work the opening.
On
47 minutes the impressive Frazer Galloway looked certain to double
Tynecastle's lead as he was fed through the middle. But as he bore down
on goal Robert Dickson was out quickly and saved at the striker's feet.
The ball then broke to the supporting Callum Paterson but again Dickson
saved and this time he was able to pounce on the resultant loose ball to
thwart the danger. It was a brilliant double save from the very good
Bonnyrigg goalkeeper.
But he could do nothing
on 51 minutes as Tynecastle were awarded a penalty after Taylor
Aitchison was brought down. Lewis Hawkins stepped up to pass the
ball into the bottom left hand corner to double Tynecastle's lead.
Tynecastle were now
looking for a third and they started to expose Bonnyrigg down both wings
with Jamie Forsyth and Callum Patterson having a field day. Rose were
starting to look tired and were struggling to clear their lines. But
they almost snatched a lifeline on 56 minutes when substitute Lee Brown
found himself with space on the right hand side of the box after a
bouncing ball was misjudged by Robbie McIntyre. He shot well across the
goal but the ball just evaded the sliding boot of Jamie Knox and then
the left hand post.
But
it was an increasingly rare foray in attack for Rose as Tynecastle took
full control of this game. They should have scored a third on 67 minutes
when great wing play from Jamie Forsyth saw him feed the ball across
goal to the onrushing Callum Paterson but his first time shot was
brilliantly saved by Robert Dickson diving to his right.
Dickson again came to
Bonnyrigg's rescue as full time neared with another point blank save
from Patterson.
Full Time 2-0
After a close first half
Tynecastle stepped things up in the second and they appeared to be the
fitter side as time went on and their pace and movement in midfield and
up front caused Bonnyrigg problems. But the Midlothian side can be
pleased with their first half performance in which they matched their
opponents and looked solid in defence and competitive in midfield. Scott
Dunlop did well before being replaced on the right wing and Ryan
Somerville did a great job leading the line and holding the ball up. In
goal, Robert Dickson had a terrific match and his back four played
equally well before eventually succumbing to Tynecastle's numerous
second half attacks.
Tynecastle looked very
good throughout. Great passing and movement eventually won the day for
them but it was built upon a solid first half performance from the
defence and midfield. Neil Gibson, Dale Finnie and Josh Riddell kept
Bonnyrigg at bay at the back whilst Fergus Lockhart and Lewis Hawkins
probed away in the middle of the park. Up front Frazer Galloway always
looked a threat and Callum Patterson could have had at least two goals
if it wasn't for the outstanding Robert Dickson.
But
this week's Pink Man of the Match award goes to wee Jamie Forsyth.
He has been kept out of the side in recent weeks but his second half
performance was excellent and the longer it went on the better he got.
To cap it all he scored a terrific goal which he was obviously delighted
with going by his celebrations.
The match was excellently
refereed by Andy Moyes who had a firm grip on the meatier tackles whilst
always looking to let play flow. |
