Andrew Jones scores his first and Tynecastle's second at Saughton

Tynecastle comfortably negotiated their 4th round tie against Crieff Juniors at Saughton to move into the final 16. Two goals each from Andrew Jones and Craig Sinclair added to the opener from Jamie Anderson to give the home side a winning margin that didn't flatter them.

Crieff will be disappointed at their overall performance and you felt they didn't really do themselves justice. But Tynecastle were quicker and more alert in every part of the pitch and deservedly progressed into the latter stages of this competition.

The opening 10 minutes of this match laid the ground for what was to come. Tynecastle pressed from the first whistle and never really gave the visiting Crieff side any time to settle. Crieff barely made it out of their own half in that opening period and it seemed only a matter of time before Tynecastle would score.

On seven minutes they almost did. Brilliant wing play on the right by Gavin Pettigrew led to him leaving the Crieff full back chasing his shadow but his ball across the face of the goal deserved better than to be lifted over the bar from the centre of the box.

The home side had another chance on 11 minutes when Andrew Jones was played through in on the centre of goals but he shot straight at Benjamin Tough in the Crieff goal who saved easily.

But Crieff didn't heed these early warnings and on 13 minutes Tynecastle took the lead. A corner on the right wasn't cleared properly by the visiting defence and after a few seconds of pinball in the 6 yard box it fell to big Jamie Anderson who made no mistake with his left foot from 3 yards.

Two minutes later and it should have been 2-0. Andrew Jones was again played through on goal by the industrious Scott Aitken but this time he screwed his shot just wide of the left hand post when he seemed certain to score.

Crieff were toiling to get themselves into the game with any threat of an attack immediately being snuffed out by the Tynecastle midfield with Kenny O'Brien in particular having a marvellous match in the centre.

But they almost snatched an equaliser on 24 minutes. Daniel Duffy failed to properly collect a corner under pressure but Crieff just couldn't convert the resultant stramash. The Forth Valley side were starting to enjoy some success on the left hand side through Euan Carter and their physical, but skilful, centre forward Daniel McKay was also starting to show some menace.

But just as they might have felt they had ridden the early storm they found themselves two down. Crieff again had an attack broken down in the middle of the park and wee Scott Aitken quickly fed the ball through to Andrew Jones who this time made no mistake, coolly slotting the ball home into the bottom right hand corner past the exposed Benjamin Tough.

Three minutes before half time and Tynecastle made it three. A long corner on the left was played back across goal for Andrew Jones to smash home his second goal of the afternoon.

Half Time 3-0

After an extended half time team talk, the Crieff side took to the field determined to get themselves back into this game. And they almost did so immediately. Jamie Clunie was played in on the right hand side and he unleashed a superb shot that seemed destined for the top corner only to see Daniel Duffy leap to his right to turn the ball behind for a corner with a quite magnificent save. It was goalkeeping of the highest order from the Tynie number one.

And Tynecastle were again let of the hook from the resultant corner. The ball was played to the back post where it was fed back across goal to Ciaran Anderson who could only look on in agony as his side footed effort cannoned back off the left hand post.

What a chance it was for Crieff to claw a goal back and get themselves within touching distance again of their Edinburgh opponents. And how they were made to regret it as almost immediately Tynecastle swept upfield and made it 4-0. Scott Aitken was again the architect, skipping past a defender and playing the ball into the feet of substitute Craig Sinclair. Sinclair still had lots to do but he evaded three Crieff challenges before slotting the ball past Benjamin Tough from the edge of the 6 yard box.

It was tough luck on Crieff but Tynecastle were in no mood to show them mercy and 9 minutes later the home side went five ahead with the goal of the game. Scott Aiken was again involved. He fed the ball out wide to Jamie Anderson who quickly played the ball across goal for Craig Sinclair to stroke the ball home from 3 yards.

Tynecastle were rampant and Crieff, having fallen out of the game, were in danger of losing heavily. However, encouraged by their large travelling support and coaching team they begun to show a little bit of what they can do for the first time in this match. Their good centre forward Daniel McKay had a chance to pull one back on the hour when he attempted to pass a ball home at the back post only to see Daniel Duffy save with his legs.

The Crieff side ended the game playing some good passing football and with a little bit of luck might have snatched a consolation goal. But Tynecastle were comfortable and saw out this game without too much trouble to deservedly progress into the next round.

Full Time 5-0

This was a good cup tie albeit a little one-sided and you feel that the big Crieff side will go home feeling they probably had much more to offer. But Tynecastle were very good . Solid at the back through Brad McKay and Stuart Duncanson and quick and mobile up front with excellent performances from Scott Aitken, Andrew Jones and Gavin Pettigrew. Conor Edmonds again showed his footballing abilities and in the middle of the park David Liddle was solid and snappy. The second half substitutes, Ruairidh Donaldson, Michael Elder and Craig Sinclair all added to Crieff's problems with the latter pitching in with the two second half goals. And Daniel Duffy dealt with everything in his way in goals.

For Crieff, Euan Carter enjoyed some success down the left and Daniel McKay worked tirelessly for the cause. But too many seemed to have an off day and Tynecastle were dominant in the midfield and forward areas.

The player who epitomised the whole Tynecastle approach to the game gets this week's man of the match award. From start to finish he seemed to be everywhere, winning tackle after tackle and feeding the ball to his team-mates. A quite brilliant performance in the centre of the pitch by Kenny O'Brien who went off to warm applause from the touchline when he was substituted with 5 minutes to go.
