For periods of this match, held at "under construction" St Augustine's
HS, Edina Hibs from the U13 third division looked set to defeat their
second division counterparts, Salvesen. The team from the south of
Edinburgh completely dominated the opening 15 minutes and had at least 4
clear cut chances to put the game beyond Salvesen, even at that early
stage. But in that period, they could only manage one and it was
Salvesen who dragged their way back into the game and who eventually got
their noses far enough in front to thwart the Edina challenge.
Edina set their stall out
from the outset with their tactics of playing balls in behind the
Salvesen defence paying numerous early dividends. At this stage of the
game the Salvesen defence looked very uneasy and were really struggling
to cope with the Edina attack. Helped by a strong midfield pressing game
Edina took complete control.
They should have been
ahead as early as 6 minutes. Cameron Reid looked suspiciously offside
but referee Knox gave the Edina forward the benefit of the doubt as he
raced clear of the Salvesen defence. But goalkeeper Ryan Menzies came
out to block well and an early chance had gone for the away side.
A minute later, Wayne
Simpson, almost gave Hibs the lead with a speculative effort from fully
25 yds which just missed the top right hand corner.
At this stage of the game
Edina were pressing very hard. The Salvesen defence was playing very
high up the pitch leaving acres of space in behind them for Edina to
exploit with channelled balls in behind. But several chances went
astray. Then, in 10 minutes, Edina got the goal their early pressure
deserved. The boys in green and white were awarded a free kick 6 yards
from the goal line out on the far left. Ryan Johnston took the
kick and floated a lovely shot high over the defence and goalkeeper and
into the right hand corner of the net.
Edina were rampant at the
moment with Ryan Johnston, Darryn Gold, Wayne Simpson and Cameron Reid
causing all sorts of problems.
Then, out of nowhere, and
with virtually their first attack of the match, Salvesen pulled
themselves level. Ryan Robertson looped a high, speculative shot over
the goalkeeper. The effort rebounded off the bar and wee Liam McAdie
was there first to "stoop" and head the ball over the line into the
empty net.
That
goal proved to be the turning point in the match. Suddenly Edina's early
dominance disappeared and Salvesen began to assert themselves more in
attack. Much of the probing was being launched by big left back,
Alex Gilchrist, who went on to have a magnificent game. In 19 minutes he
begun a move that should have put Salvesen ahead. Strong in the tackle,
Gilchrist fed the ball into Ryan Robertson, who showed great touch and
control to flick it past the defender. He then played it across the goal
for the advancing Liam Elder but he could only squirm it past the right
hand post when it seemed easier to score.
It was now Edina's turn
to be on the back foot. As Salvesen attacked on both flanks and through
the middle, Edina were struggling to clear their lines and it came as no
surprise when the home side went ahead just before half time. Edina
keeper Ross Paterson could only parry a shot from outside the box and
number 9 Ryan Robertson was there on hand to slide it home under
the recovering keeper.
It capped an amazing
turnaround for Salvesen after having been under the "cosh" for the early
part of this match.
Half Time 2-1
Edina started the second
half brightly, just as they did in the first and should have equalised 8
minutes into the half. A great overlapping run by Josh Henderson saw him
skip challenges on the left wing and he played a lovely ball into the
path of Ryan Johnston. The young Edina player should have scored his
second of the match from only 8 yards out but he swept the ball over the
bar. A pass either side of the goalkeeper would have saw the match
squared at 2-2.
Salvesen were showing
some good touches and control in the middle of the park with Richard
Hutton, Liam Elder and Declan Laing all playing well and supported by
the home team's full backs Alex Gilchrist and Jason Foggo. But Edina
were seeing more and more of the ball and substitute Sean Alexander was
having some success on the left hand side.

The game was now becoming
very competitive, with some tough challenges, and referee John Knox had
to speak to several players to calm things down. But despite Edina's
probing it was again Salvesen who scored next. A good stop by goalkeeper
Ross Paterson fell to Liam McAdie and he reacted quicker than
anybody else to squeeze a shot into the bottom right hand corner to put
Salvesen clear at 3-1.
But Edina weren't finished yet and they
pulled themselves back into things with the game's best goal. Big Sean
Alexander did well on the left. He went past the Salvesen full back and
passed the ball low across goal for Brad Cairns to clip the ball
first time past the Salvesen goalkeeper. It was a first class finish.
As the game entered its
final phase, Edina were almost playing 2-4-4 as they went for the
equaliser. They were pressing hard but Salvesen always looked dangerous
on the break. No matter the formations, it made for a very entertaining
all out attacking finale. But neither side could create much more of any
note and it was Salvesen who advanced into the second round, perhaps a
shade fortunately.
Edina coach Derek
Moorhead felt his players did very well, "We were up against a side
in a division above us but for periods of the game we dominated things.
It was a real good chance for the boys to test themselves and I though
they did really well. If we had scored more in the first 15/20 minutes
then we could have been out of sight". Salvesen coach, Rankin Laing,
was not overly impressed with things despite winning the match. He said,
"That was probably our worse performance of the season. We are hoping to
go on and do well this year but our passing game deserted us today
and Edina can count themselves very unfortunate."

It was a great cup tie, and apart from a short period in the second half
was played in the right spirit. Best for Edina was Darryn Gold and Wayne
Simpson and second half substitutes, Sean Alexander and Sean Moorhead
made a noticeable difference with their fresher legs. For Salvesen, Ben
Harrison came onto a good game after a shaky start and Ryan Robertson,
Richard Hutton and Jason Foggo did well. Two goal hero Liam McAdie was
an obvious candidate for man of the match but on this occasion The
Pink Man of the Match award goes to Salvesen left back Alex
Gilchrist. Alex showed great composure when under pressure in
defence and launched many an attack. An all round great performance from
him.
