BURNSIDE STORM BACK TO DEFEAT MAYFIELD AND EASTHOUSES

Burnside No 10, Steven Carr, wheels away to his right after sending the ball past the diving Mayfield and Easthouses keeper, Shane McDowall, for the equalising goal for the home side.

BURNSIDE beat Mayfield and Easthouses 4-2 in their Festival Inns Sunday Amateur League clash at the Civil Service Ground, but made it difficult for themselves by giving away silly goals.

Burnside team boss, Euan Mackay, said: "We won comfortably in the end but our coach told the players they must stop giving away these silly goals in games. We have lost our last two games but we should have been 4-0 at half-time in this game." Instead, Burnside were trailing 2-1 to their young opponents from Midlothian and they had only themselves to blame for being a goal behind. Not only did Burnside miss several glaring chances to score, they practically gave Mayfield and Easthouses their two goals 'on a plate'!

The home side had far more of the ball in the first half and when Gary Fisher blasted Burnside in to a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with a cracking goal from the left side of the 18yd box after a great cross from the right wing. That goal should have settled the off-target Burnside outfit, but the visiting side were back level with 30mins played, big Allan Reid taking advantage of a schoolboy error in the Burnside defence to slot the ball in to the empty net for the equaliser. Worse was to come for the home side shortly before match official, Peter Traynor blew for half-time, with the very good Martin Hughes being allowed to run in, unchallenged, on the Burnside goal to fire the ball past keeper Darren Lawrie to put Mayfield and Easthouses 2-1 ahead at the break.

It was a really crazy scoreline considering the amount of possession Burnside had enjoyed in the first half but they failed to score chance after chance. But in the second half, all that changed and the team sponsored by the pub in Gorgie Road near the Chesser junction squared the game and then went 3-2 up with two glorious goals. Both were scored by Steven Carr and his first came after a great short passing move with John Sime and Carr finished it off brilliantly with a shot that left Mayfield and Easthouses' keeper, Shane McDowall, helpless.

Burnside's next goal was another cracker, this time Fisher finished off a great run in from the left with a superb pass to set up Carr to make it 3-2 with a shot from in front of goal. This good game of football got even better after these two goals with the Midlothian side going all out for the equaliser. With the Burnside defence in a give-away mood there was every likelihood they would make it 3-3, but when Fisher let fly from well out to see the ball career in to the Mayfield and Easthouses net to put Burnside 4-2 ahead, it was 'game, set and match' to the home combine.

They deserved to take all three points but they will have to cut out the defensive errors if they want to have a good run in the Scottish Sunday Amateur Cup which starts next month. Giving away silly goals could prove to be very costly, indeed, in the huge national event for Sunday amateur clubs. Mayfield and Easthouses played good passing football but it lacked that little touch of aggression that could make them more lethal in front of the opposition goal. Credit to both clubs, however, for producing such a good game of football on the magnificent main pitch at the Civil Service Sports Ground.

The only negative to this game on a wonderful sunny afternoon, was the swearing both on and off the pitch. Two youth games were also played at the same time at this lovely venue and, at a time when the youth leagues are doing their best to clean up the game, the language coming from the amateur game was out of place in such a lovely setting. It is, however, par for the course for this type of language to be used in amateur football and the match officials appear to be powerless, or unwilling, to stop it! One of the highlights of the game came in the first half, when home keeper, Darren Lawrie, produced a stunning save when finger-tipping away the ball from under his crossbar. It was a fantastic save and his team-mate, Gary Fisher, had an outstanding game for the home team
