BOYS V GIRLS RAISES £700 FOR EDINBURGH CITY

Ready for action, the splash-hit Edinburgh City Colts and the Giuliano's  'Girls' squad.

EDINBURGH City Youth FC under-16 Colts have raised a whopping £700 towards their Easter trip to Europe from their sponsored game against Giulianos Girls select at Saughton Enclosure.

In what was a 'no-win' situation for the boys, their reputation was saved when they emerged 5-2 winners in a game played on an Astroturf pitch mostly under water from the heavy rain. Colts spokesman, Stuart Dalziel, said: "It surely must have been the wettest night of the year so far as the City Colts lined up to face a Giulianos Girls select team in their Amsterdam trip fund raising game. It was agreed before hand with referee Scott Stewart that 35 minutes each way would be enough in the torrential rain.

The match started off at a good pace with the girls showing that they were a good passing team and the boys were going to have to work hard for a win. City coach Julie Dalziel started of playing up front for Giulianos and had a couple of chances to score but missed, much to the amusement of her young City players.City scored first when Stuart Gibb split the girls defence to finish low into the left hand corner and Jason Kydd followed minutes later with the first of his two goals on the night.

The girls played well but found the pace of the young City Colts a bit too hard to handle on the night. Bradley Scott netted a third for the Colts. The rain was continuous the whole night but both sets of players gave their all and the match was played in good spirits. Giulianos scored their first when May Baillie showed a good turn of pace (despite her advancing years) and did well to leave the City defence in her wake and finished well to score. Daryl Leslie and another for Jason Kydd finished the scoring for the Colts. A well taken effort from young Kirsty Lawrie for Giulianos made the scoreline look more respectable at 5-2 but it was not about winning on the night.

As a fund raiser this was a brilliant success with a total of £700 raised by the boys towards the cost of the trip. Special thanks to Maggie Wilson and the "old" Giulianos girls for agreeing to play us on such a terrible night it was much appreciated and maybe we can have a return match in the future!" Hopefully, it will be played in much drier conditions!
