EDINBURGH City's replay with the club's
Colts outfit in the Dunfermline Building Society Scottish Under-15
Cup at Sighthill was another very special day for everyone connected
with this top youth football club in Edinburgh and it turned out to
be a terrific game of football with the Colts deserved 4-1 winners.
The wind blowing diagonally across the big pitch at this venue
did not appear to affect the players on either side, with both teams
concentrating on playing passing football and it was the Colts that
looked to be just that bit better than their club colleagues both in
ability and organisation on the day.
The first half was full of good football and movement but without
a goal at either end, although there was no lack of effort from the
players on the pitch. At every turn, they cancelled each other out
with the best chance of the first half ending with a snap shot at
the Colts' goal bouncing off the top of the crossbar.
Even then, however, it was the all-black Colts side that had the
bulk of the play and the better chances and that pattern continued
after the half-time break. This replay was scheduled to go to extra
time and penalties to get a result and the evenly balanced game
looked as if it might need that to separate the sides but, when
Colts very good No 11, Ruraidh Stevenson, broke the deadlock shortly
after the restart, with a superb effort from the right of the 18yd
box, the pattern of the game changed completely.
Colts lead did not last long and a terrific ball through the
centre of their defence gave City's Mark Hendrie the chance to
equalise with a beautifully judged lob over advancing goalie, Jack
Wilcox, and the game was back in the melting pot at 1-1. But Colts
had lifted their game to a higher level and they were not going to
be denied their moment of glory against their club colleagues.
Midfielder Michael Glass had a brilliant game for Colts and it was
he who bagged their second goal, firing a great shot from the left
of the 18yd box in to the fare corner of the City goal to make it
2-1.

Allan Hamilton went close to adding another goal for Colts as
they continued to create the better chances and another goal duly
arrived with my man-of-the-match, Glass, scoring lovely goal to make
it 3-1. To complete a great second-half display, Stewart Ogilvie
followed up to knock the ball over the goal-line after the City
keeper had saved his first attempt to take the winning margin to 4-1
in favour of Edinburgh City Colts.
Colts' keeper, Jack Wilcox, was also another of the stars in his
side and it he produced several great saves late in the second half
to keep the opposition at bay. Colts' coach, John Mitchell, said: "I
was very pleased with the way our team played. They knocked the ball
about well and there was a lot of good movement off the ball, too.
It was also good to hear the players encouraging each other and I
thought our organisation was good on the day. I thought our team was
very impressive and they were good winners!"
