EDINBURGH CITY COLTS IN MAJOR SCOTTISH
CUP UPSET
by IAN MACKAY & GEORGE GAUNT

In one of the shock
results of the first-round ties in the Dunfermline Building Society
Scottish Under-14 Youth Cup, third division outfit, Edinburgh City
Colts, beat top-rated Tynecastle FC 2-1.
This win for the
Colts is another sign of the rising status of the Edinburgh City Youth
FC at this level of football. While work is ongoing to repair the
vandalised changing rooms at Sighthill used as a base by Edinburgh City
Youth FC, officials at this club have kept things moving - onwards and
upwards - at alternative venues in the west side of Edinburgh. Colts
team coach, George Gaunt, another one of the really nice group of men
involved in this club, is still trying to come to terms with his side's
latest triumph.
In a match report of
the game at the doomed
St Augustine's
High School playing fields, George said: "It's a pity you were not there
- it was one of my proudest moments as a coach! This was a match we were
not expected to win but nobody told the boys that. The team talk was
easy – they were all sent out to do the best they could possibly do and
not one of them disappointed. Straight from the kick-off it was very
obvious our boys were up for the match – they tackled aNd hassled the
Tynecastle boys at every opportunity. I could barely believe what I was
watching as the time ticked on and Colts gave as good as they got.
Then, unbelievably,
in the 15th minute we took the lead when David Hutchison
mesmerised their defender with a fantastic turn and fired a dangerous
cross into the box which took a deflection past their goalie and the
ball into the back of the net. Tynecastle, as you would expect, came
right back at us and created a few good chances but a combination of
good defending, a bit of luck (for a change) and some superb goalkeeping
from Adam Moore kept them at bay. However, in the 25th minute
following some poor defending, Tynecastle finally got the ball in the
back of our net. The final ten minutes of the half were a very anxious
time but the Colts stood tall and got us to half time at 1-1.
After their heroics
in the first half you might have expected the boys to tire a bit in
the second stage but, if anything, they found even more effort from
somewhere! You could see they believed (even though the crowd dare not
believe) they could win this game. Ten minutes into the second
period Matt Gaunt picked up the ball at right back, swept past a
Tynecastle forward and played a great pass down the line to David
Hutchison who left the defender standing with a fantastic turn. David
fired in a great cross and, following a scramble, the ball fell to the
feet of Liam O'Donnell who calmly fired past the goalie. No one could
quite believe it and the next 25 minutes were the longest of the
coaches’ lives!
Tynecastle never
gave up but the Edinburgh City Colts more than coped with whatever was
thrown at them. Finally, the ref blew for full time and the boys and
parents went wild! This is a result that will long live in the memory of
everyone connected with Edinburgh City Colts! I would like to express my
admiration for the Tynecastle players who all lined up to congratulate
the Colts on their shock win and it was also great to hear from some of
the Tynecastle parents who thought the Colts more than deserved their
win. My post-match speech was an emotional affair and it was nice to
see the performance meant as much to the parents as it did to the coach
– there wasn’t a dry eye in the place!"
