There
were joyous scenes at Polson Park in Tranent when Edinburgh City
Colts clinched the under 14’s League division 3 title by beating
Tranent Colts 3-0. The scenes were a delight to watch as the players
and spectators celebrated in style. The occasion was helped greatly
by the very sporting manner of the Tranent contingent who warmly
congratulated their opponents on the pitch at the end of the game
and later applauded the Edinburgh City players into the changing
rooms. At a time where the game has received a great deal of
negative publicity, it was refreshing to see the positive side of
the game shine through.
The
game itself started brightly with both teams adopting positive
formations and looking to get in behind the defence. Edinburgh City
had an opportunity inside two minutes when a long ball took a wicked
bounce and were only thwarted when Tranent’s Darren Ramsey
deliberately handled and was rightly cautioned. City continued to
press but were fortunate not to go behind when Liam Thomson had a
great run from the half way but his shot went just wide. City then
had a chance of their own from a corner and it looked like they had
scored on three separate occasions but resolute defending by the
Tranent defence kept the ball out.
City
eventually took the lead in the 10th min when Sean Wringe
got onto the end of a lovely through ball to coolly slot past Ben
Cairns. City doubled their lead in almost identical fashion seven
minutes later when Stuart Ogilvie was able to again beat the unlucky
Cairns. City then went looking for the decisive goal to kill the
game off and forced a succession of corners. The closest they came
to scoring was when Sam Findlayson bulleted a header against the bar
and Andrew Laidlaw saw his follow-up well saved by Cairns. City were
almost made to pay for this miss when the move of the match saw
Tranent swing the ball across the pitch twice and Aaron McGinn
eventually burst into the box to narrowly shoot wide.
Right
on the half-time whistle Thomson had another breakaway chance but
Jack Wilcox saved well. The second half could not match the first
and turned into a very nervy affair. City looked to consolidate
their lead and when Findlayson was unmarked two yards out from a
corner to make it 3-0 the game was over as a contest. Tranent kept
going to the end and Thomson looked likeliest to score but the City
defence held out. Right at the end Bryce Reynolds was unmarked right
on the Tranent goal line and somehow managed to header wide when it
looked much easier to score. The final whistle sparked the scenes of
celebration as City completed the treble of the league to add to
their wins in the Paladin Cup and Pilmar Smith Trophy finals.
