MERCHISTON TOO STRONG FOR EASTHOUSES

At Harrison Park, spectators got two under-15 ties in the City Financial Edinburgh Eastern Region Cup to choose from, with North Merchiston beating Easthouses 6-0 on the smaller and tighter pitch near to the Union Canal, while AC Oxgangs staged the mother and father of all revivals to beat North Merchiston Cotls 4-3 in a pulsating and wonderful game on the larger of the two pitches.

On the smaller pitch, North Merchiston were much the better side and their good organisation produced a non-stop supply of goals against a gallant outfit from Midlothian. Merchi skipper, Ian Dickson, opened the scoring in the first half and that goal was all the home side had to show at the break, despite dominating the game.. Shaun Lennon in the Easthouses goal was the busiest player on the pitch in this game and the fact he was only beaten once in the first half was an example of how well he played in goal. However, there was no stopping this good North Merchiston combine in the second half. Shaun Baigan made it 2-0 as the floodgates threatened to open with Easthouses confined in their own half of the pitch. Baigan made it 3-0 for Merchi and they were in total control of the game as Mark Dunn took the margin to 4-0 followed by a goal from Dickson to make the final scoreline 5-0 for North Merchiston.

AC OXGANGS IN AMAZING COME BACK

The North Merchison Colts v AC Oxgangs cup tie produced one of the most wonderful second-half fightbacks, imaginable!

In a very good first half performance, the home side went 1-0 up with a goal from G-P Franchi in the 34th minute and Paul Douglas made it 2-0 a minute later. It was still 2-0 at the start of the seond half, but when Franchi made it 3-0 shortly after the restart, the Colts looked to have established a 3-0 lead. What followed, however, was truly magical for the AC Oxgangs team and their fans on the touchlines! The tide well and truly turned when Heriot's pupil, big Nick McGown, scored twice to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

These two goals inspired the visiting side and they looked unstoppable as Jordan Burrns fired a wonderful shot from the right over Merchi keeper, Jordan McCabe in to the far corner of the net to square the game at 3-3. The excitement on the AC Oxgangs touchlines after this goal reached fever pitch when Burns headed the ball over the Merchi goal-line in the closing minutes to snatch a memorable 4-3 win for the visitors.

It must have been tough for the North Merchiston Colts team and officials to take this sore defeat, but their behaviour and also that of the AC Oxgangs team and officials was a wonderful credit to youth club football. The sporting atmosphere from both clubs made this game one of the best of the season to watch. The second half was something special for AC Oxgangs with exceptional performances from all their players, while North Merchiston Colts must still be wondering how they lost a match-winning 3-0 lead!
