Y2K Project v Tranent

The Tranent Squad
The latest round
of matches organised by the East Lothian Community Support Team was
played recently at Newbattle school between the Y2K Project and
Tranent. The match ended with honours even at 5-5. Tranent took the
lead in only 39 seconds through Conner Clelland but Y2K’s Graeme
Crew hit back with two goals in the first five minutes. Andy McGowan
then stretched the Y2k lead further to give them a comfortable 3-1
lead at half time. Tranent hit back in the second half with a
marvellous hat trick from Mark Innes in 40, 45 & 52 mins to give
Tranent a well-deserved lead but Crew completed his hat trick in 57
mins to again make it all square. Referee Calum Bryson was working
well to keep tight control of this game and Tranent looked to have
won it when a an OG gave them the lead with two minutes left but
Steven Bowell forced the ball home with almost the last kick of the
game to ensure that the game ended all square. A fine example of
football from both teams, well handled by excellent match official
Calum Bryson.

Ormiston Utd v
Tranent

The Ormiston Utd Squad
Tranent then moved
to play a local derby against Ormiston and triumphed 2-1. This was
another great advert for the hard working East Lothian Community
Support Team. Watched by a crowd of around 100 this derby game
between Ormiston United and Tranent saw a 2-1 victory for the away
side. The opening 10 minutes saw a frantic start to the game with
some hard challenges going in from both sides, which led to referee
Calum Bryson having to keep a firm lid on things. Once the game
settled the large vocal crowd were treated to an excellent game of
football between two passionate sides. Ormiston led by the excellent
Robert Berry in midfield played some nice football and were unlucky
with a couple of chances spurned early on. It was Tranent though who
opened the scoring on 20 minutes when a goalmouth scramble saw
Connor Clelland poke home the ball from close range to give the
visitors the lead. Tranent now with their noses in front started to
dictate the play had a few chances before they scored their second,
a fast counter attack led to a wonderful goal scored from the edge
of the penalty box with a fine shot by Mark Innes. As half time
approached Ormiston began to settle again, however were thwarted on
at least three occasions by the goalkeeping heroics of Daniel Hall
in the Tranent goal. Half time saw changes for both sides as
Ormiston searched for a goal to get them back in the match and
Tranent looked to add to their lead. Ormiston had much of the
possession early on the second half and this paid off with a good
goal scored by David Latimer that was finished well. However Tranent
always looked dangerous on the counter-attack and should have added
to their lead after spurning a host of chances their cause not
helped by some excellent defending from the Ormiston backline and if
they did get past them they found Brian Burnett in fine form in
goals. Nerves began to show as Ormiston piled on the pressure for an
equaliser, but the Tranent defence never showed any signs of letting
this game slip from their grasp. When the final whistle sounded it
resulted in scenes of great relief from Tranent players but all
credit to the Ormiston players who fought until the last kick of the
ball both sets of players were a credit to themselves and everyone
involved in this project. East Lothian Council’s Community Liaison
Team who organised this latest in a host of games and bring together
these 2 teams after meeting groups of young people aged between
14-18 years of age on the streets of Tranent and Ormiston were
delighted with how the game had went. Douglas Ormston, Neighbourhood
Outreach Co-ordinator and coach for Tranent commented: “I am pleased
with the sprit the game was played in and that the two sets of
players had done themselves proud with their commitment shown” he
also commented on the crowd who had come down to watch. We are all
delighted to see so many parents, friends and locals who were here
tonight to show their support for these two teams of young men!” He
added:”These teams train regularly every Monday night and up to 20
players attend the sessions funded through the Big Lottery Fund’s
Active Steps Programme and that games were organised to play other
teams from across the Lothian’s.

Haddington v Pentland Panthers U15
Pentland Panthers
visited Haddington looking for all three points to keep up their
hopes of winning the under 15’s league Division Four and although
they finally ended up winners 4-2 they were made to battle all the
way by a hardworking Haddington Athletic team. Panthers were
committed to playing their usual free-flowing football but were
continually frustrated by the commitment of the Haddington lads and
were shown the old adage that ‘hard work will beat talent if talent
does not work hard’! Martin Smith deservedly opened the scoring for
Panthers in the 12th min but Haddington hit back three
minutes later when the impressive Michael McKenzie crossed for
Gareth McDermott to hit home. This seemed to give panthers the shock
they needed and Stephen Griffin then had several good runs at the
Haddington defence who were playing well as a unit until the 33rd
min when another great run and shot by Griffin allowed Panthers to
go in 2-1 ahead at the interval. Haddington picked up the pace in
the second half when Telfer King was rewarded for his untiring play
in the 51st min to bring the scores level. Panthers went
ahead in fortunate circumstances in 59 ins when another great
Griffin run and shot brought out a fantastic save from Darryll
Keillor and when the ball broke out to Joseph McVey his shot from 25
yards was going into Keillor’s arms but a Haddington defender stuck
out a knee and the ball slid into the opposite corner. This really
brought this excellent game to another level as both sides went in
search of the decisive goal and it was Panthers who got it with
eight minutes left when Griffin put in a great cross and when Euan
Moffat swung a boot at it he was relieved to see the ball bounce off
his knee to deceive the Haddington defence. This would have defeated
lesser teams but Haddington showed great fighting qualities to keep
going right to the final whistle but Panthers held out for the very
precious 3 points. A fantastic advert for youth football with the
final score, Haddington Athletic 2, Pentland Panthers 4.
