ONCE Newcraighall Leith Vics opened the
scoring in their home Soccer World Scottish Amateur Cup clash with
Auchtermuchty Bellvue it was then only a matter of how many goals
the Lothian & Edinburgh AFA side would score against their visitors
from Fife.
The final scoreline of 7-0 for the home combine just about summed
up the difference in class between the top-rated Edinburgh outfit
and the young Fifers. Auchtermuchty lost eight of their players at
the end of last season and they are currently going through a
rebuilding phase and, unfortunately for them, they came up against a
Newcraighall side that is currently top form.
It took 15 minutes for the home side to make the breakthrough and
it came when livewire Bobby Reid sent a driven ball from the right
in to the Auchtermuchty goalmouth and Neil Ryan was spot on to send
a great shot hurtling past opposing goalkeeper, Colin Niven, to make
it 1-0. Three minutes later, James Reilly hammered a great angular
shot from the right across the goal in to the far corner of the net
to increase the home side's lead to 2-0.
Before Auchtermuchty could recover, they were hit with another
devastating blow, Ryan sending over an excellent corner from the
right for Steve Igoe to head the ball over the line to take the
score to 3-0. With three goals in the bag, the home side proceeded
to move the ball about the park with great precision and speed,
leaving their young opponents chasing shadows.
Niven and his colleagues in the Auchtermuchty defence were pushed
to the limit to keep the score down to 3-0 at the break. Shortly
after the restart by excellent match referee, Gary McKenzie, Igoe
scored from close in to put Auchtermuchty four behind. Andy Dailly
came on a sub for the home side and he made his mark straight away,
scoring one of the best goals of the game when he finished off a
lovely close passing move with Igoe by taking the ball wide of Niven
to stroke it in to the empty net and that made it 5-0.
With
the Fifers struggling, Dailly then went on a great solo run that
took him through the Auchtermuchty defence and he brought out a huge
roar from the home touchline with a tremendous shot past Niven from
16yd to put the game beyond the Fifers at 6-0. Bobby Reid got the
seventh goal for the homesters when he was set up by Reilly to make
it 7-0.
There were no more goals in the time left after that goal, due to
some grim defending by the visiting side. It was a one-sided cup tie
with Newcraighall Leith Vics in outstanding form against a team
currently struggling in the Fife leagues. On the magnificent big
pitch at Newcraighall Park, the quality of passing and movement from
the home side was far too much for their younger opponents to cope
with and the final score could and should have been much greater. I
cannot say if Auchtermuchty even managed to force a corner in the
game.
