ST AUGUSTINE'S COME BACK TO WIN AT CURRIE HS

St Augustine's No 5, Dale McKenzie, heads home a spectacular equaliser against Currie High School.

THE under-15 school fixture between Currie and St Augustine's was not just a good game of football, it was eventually a great game, for the players and spectators alike at the sole remaining pitch at Currie High School.

The playing surface is in much better condition than previous years and the players responded with what turned out to a be a real cracker of a game. The home side went 1-0 up, possibly against the run of play in the first half, with Greg Smith breaking the deadlock to put Currie 1-0 ahead. St Augustine's had only themselves to blame for going behind as they missed chance after chance to open their account. The Currie defenders were heroic in keeping the opposing side from scoring, too. But all that changed when big Dale McKenzie, who plays for Hutchison Vale FC, crashed home the equaliser in the second half with the ball just crossing the Currie goal-line to make it 1-1.

McKenzie then was given the chance on his second attempt at the same free-kick to thunder the ball past home keeper, Fergus Scott, to put St Augustine's 2-1 ahead. The play continued non-stop with the home side having to battle to keep their opponents from adding to their tally. It was great to watch and as the number of spectators at the game increased, so too did the tension and effort from both teams. St Augustine's controlled the game and they deservedly got another goal when Tynecastle FC hot-shot, Ryan D'Angelo, fired home a third goal in the closing minutes.

I could watch and report on games like this every day of the week, it was so good. Both schools should be proud of the players on the respective sides, as their behaviour and commitment was excellent. Currie are due to play St Kentigern's (West Lothian) in the Scottish Schools Shield and, hopefully, the school will provide details of where and when the tie is taking place so that it can receive maximum publicity and coverage. This offer is open to all schools in the Lothian regions. Contact mackayian@blueyonder.co.uk with all the details, please!
