MISERY FOR VIPOND

Tynecastle striker, Paul Fergie (No 10) slams the ball into the empty Salvesen goal after winning a challenge with opposition goalkeeper, Jamie Vipond, in the under-14 game at Saughton Park.

SALVESEN Boys Club’s under-14 goalkeeper, Jamie Vipond, was on the wrong end of what must have seemed like a shooting gallery in the game against Tynecastle East at Saughton Park. In almost non-stop assaults on his goal, young Jamie was beaten seven times in a game dominated by this good young Tynecastle East outfit.

If it is of any consolation to the  Salvesen keeper, it could and should have been a lot worse. The number of chances scored by the Tynecastle players kept the scoreline down. The home side were much bigger physically and they also looked to be much more tuned in to the game from the start. It was one-way traffic from the opening whistle from Stuart Gregor and it was not long before Tynecastle went in front, big Paul Fergie beating Vipond in a challenge for a long ball up the left and once he was in the clear, Fergie hammered the ball in to the empty net to make it 1-0. The home side’s second counter was a truly spectacular goal, with Jamie Anderson running up the left out of defence with the ball at his feet and the Tynecastle No 3 delivered a perfect ball across the 6yd line for David Liddell to smash an unsavable volley on the run in to the Salvesen net.

That made it 2-0 and it went up to 3-0 when a shot from Danny Hubbard found the back of the net after the restart to the second half. Gavin Pettigrew took advantage of a defensive mix-up in the Salvesen goalmouth to make it 4-0. Further goals from Calum Donaldson and Jack Ramage (pen) took the margin in favour of Tynecastle to 6  -0 and it was fitting that the final goal of the game, the seventh, was scored by the Tynecastle player with No 7 on his jersey, Pettigrew, to complete Jamie Vipond’s misery.
