MATCH REPORT BY IAN MACKAY

BINNIE UNABLE TO STEM EDINA GOAL MACHINE

EDINA Hibs under-13s became the latest ‘ton-up boys’ in Eastern Region Youth football circles by beating Civil Service Youth 10-1 in a league clash under the floodlights at Meadowmill in East Lothian.

Clubs from Edinburgh travel regularly to East Lothian in the search for modern facilities and Meadowmill was ‘like a home from home’ for this talented young Edina Hibs squad. In what was their 16th game of the season, the wee Hibees were in scintillating form and the gallant and hard-working kids from west Edinburgh were on the receiving end for much of the game.

This was, in some aspects, a ‘funny old game’ of football as Civil Service Youth actually played some very good football and the spirit among the players was very good indeed. CS Youth struggled to contain the ‘goal machine’ from East Edinburgh but they could not hold out against such sustained attacks and their brilliant young keeper, Chris Binnie was beaten in the 10th minute from a lovely judged lob by Jake Stenson to give Edina a 1-0 lead.

The brave wee keeper had to pick the ball out of the back of the net five more times before top match official, William MacKenzie, blew for half-time. Others on target for Edina were Josh Riddell, Aaron Blues, Sam Todd (2). In between, Binnie brought off several outstanding saves. CS Youth tried their upmost to play passes but Edina keeper, Kyle Hannah was a virtual spectator.

In the second half, the visiting side put even more effort in to the game, refusing to let their heads drop, but the goals kept coming for Edina Hibs. Stevenson made it 7-0, followed by other goals from Haydn Crane before Blair Hunter headed in a wonderful consolation goal for CS Youth. With time running out Easton Sent the contingent on the Edina touchline delirious when he rammed the ball in to the net to make it ‘100 up!'

Quite a night it was, then for Edina Hibs, and all credit too, to Civil Service Youth. They showed lots of good touches and never gave up. Well done to both teams!
