MATCH REPORT BY BOB WILSON

LANARKSHIRE PAY THE PENALTY AS
EDINBURGH PROGRESS TO QUARTER FINALS

On a very muddy pitch in Hamilton on Saturday morning the Edinburgh Schools select found themselves 0-2 down after only 11mins and although Stephen McGinn pulled one back a further goal from Lanarkshire meant that we trailed 1-3 at half time. It could have been worse but just before the break Sean Pryde had a magnificent save from a penalty kick to keep us in the game.

The second half was only four minutes old when Lanarkshire took advantage of a defensive error to increase their lead but fortunately Jordan Irving netted soon afterwards to keep our deficit at two goals. In a hectic spell on the hour mark Nico Gibson grabbed a third goal for Edinburgh but Lanarkshire scored with a header from a corner and then missed their second penalty of the game or a result may have been out of reach for the boys from the Capital.

Further goals from Stephen McGinn and Nico Gibson brought us level with only three minutes to go but alas Lanarkshire replied almost immediately with an unstoppable thirty yarder and it was deep into stoppage time before a brave header from Dale McKenzie brought the final score to six goals each.

The Lanarkshire boys improved their penalty taking slightly but well taken kicks by Liam Riorden, James Hymers, Nico Gibson and Dale McKenzie saw Edinburgh progress to the quarter finals of the competition.
